Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
1. 3 step no back release 2. 5 step one or two back release 3. sprint out 4. play action - off inside iso 5. play action - off off tackle power 6. bootlegs - waggles - backside guard pulls 7. nakeds
3-step passing game- If it is a true 3 step and throw then the OL should block it has an aggressive run block to pass block. This keeps the DL’s hands down. Not very hard to teach.
5-step passing game- The easiest concept would be a slide protection.
Sprint out- We use our outside zone concept. The RB has to reach the EMOL. The uncovered guys will hinge.
Play action off of Iso- A great play! Georgia killed Tennessee with this a few years ago in Knoxville. The FB is usually always open. Just run it like a regular ISO. Of course the line cannot get over two yards. You have to sell it.
Play action off of tackle power- Don’t use this one, but I would run it the same as if you were running the ball. You want to sell the fake.
Bootleg- We use our inside zone concept. If we were faking to the right and bootlegging to the left, then the RG would pull. Once again sell the fake.
Naked- Once again we use our inside zone concept. The only difference is: the backside tackle holds his block on the DL. If you have a fast QB leave the backside end alone.
I hope this helps.
Coach Campbell has a good book about Offensive Line Play. It goes into depth about the 5 step and slide protection rules. That is probably the most difficult.
Good Luck Start teaching now.
