The 1/2 man advantage for BOB protection is the inside out position that an offensive lineman works for on any down defender or any blitzing defender. The inside out position creates the pocket and forces a defender to take his rush to the outside. Its also known as I call it as closing the door to the down defender or any rush defender. Yes, our back makes the protection call. We drill this constantly both off-season and in-season. He'll identify the front and make his call to the OL setting the protection. Our back works with OL during all pass protection periods during the week. I like the concept and it helps out our QB. pdow
We have had success with SOME teams that run the "Bear 46" with "BOB" IF they give you a good "CLUE". Example: One GOOD Bear 46 team we played would NEVER bring the MLB IF the F/S remained in a Cover 1 look. We could live with "BOB" vs. that. If they wanted to bring the MLB - the F/S would come down & they would go to Cover 0 - if we caught the F/S out of centerfield we could go into the full slide with a "RIP" or "LIZ" call at the LOS, indicating the side we were sliding to.
If a team disquises well - best just to "Rip"/"Liz" vs "Bear 46"! Thanks
Jerry - I live in Virginia. I retired from "on the field" coaching in 2001 (after 40 years of High School, College & Semi-Pro). Am now a consultant to two of the best High School programs in Central Virginia, who run our style of offense.
Have enjoyed your site! Keep up the good work; Bill
PS: Our Semi Pro team sent 9 players to the Redskins during the "strike season" in 1987. The movie "Replacements" was besed on this.
As I said earlier, Coach Mountjoy lives in perhaps the most beautiful place on earth. I traveled Virginia extensively when I lived in Richmond. Loved the history, the landscape, the people. Great place. I would go back there if I could convince my wife to move to a place where it snows! I like Texas though..but Virginia is a gem. Would love to send my son to William and Mary...what a place! pdow
PDOW - Virginia has VERY GOOD High School football. U Va. & Va Tech play good Division 1A ball, & William & Mary has a very good.good Division 1AA team!
The State has the beautiful Atlantic Ocean beaches in the east, & the mountains (& snow skiing) in the west. You are right - it is beautifil!
Setting the anchor with the outside foot staggered, is the foot up or back? Seems like it would have to be back to have a power base to push off on, right?
