I hope this is on the correct board. I am coaching for the first time, as an assistant. It looks like I will be coaching the OL. The head coach says the kids had trouble blocking last year. I don't know a lot about coaching the OL but it seems I may know more than the other two coaches. I know we will be an undersized group and was wondering what kind of blocking drills and techniques to teach. Of course without having seen the kids play, I don't have a clue what I get to work with. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Coach,

I would start by getting with the OC and setting the blocking schemes for each of the plays you will run this year.

IMHO, the kids need to know "who to block" more than "how to block" at the youth level (U 12).

Design your schemes against each defense you will likely face.

Then, work on their stances and low line charge.

As the season progress, you can work on individual techniques.

Thanks. Although I'm new to coaching, I've really enjoyed reading and learning from all of the coaches here. These boards are a dream come true. I can't wait to get started. Practice starts 8/2.

Hope things are going well. I suggest making some simple blocking rules for the plays you run. If your players can memorize those (and they can), it will help them a lot if someone throws you an unexpected wrinkle, which is bound to happen since scouting for youth football is rather hard.

Thanks for the drills. I can't wait to try some of them. Practice is going very well. I took your advice and told the kids who to block. I am finding out that since they now know who to block, when they miss a block I can tell them how to get into better position to make it next time.

As for blocking rules, the 5 plays I have installed are blocked the same. Only the RB, FB, and WRs have different assignments depending on the play and direction.

Today we have our first scrimmage and I can't wait. Thanks again for all of the help.
