Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
In our offense, slide protection is dictated upon which direction the back blocks and the line then slides opposite. Ex. If back blocks to right then the line slides left. We normally have the back block to the right for simplicity's sake. This usually puts our LT on the DE which is a better matchup. If the Back is going to miss the block at least the QB should see it, assuming he is right handed. But we don't usually have to worry about it because the ball is gone quickly.
SLIDE PRO - Slide would depend on FORMATION (&/or DEF. ALIGN)! Example - if you are in "TE TRIPS" (TE; H BACK; FLANKER to SAME side, with a split end away) 3x1 set - you would have to slide AWAY from the TE. In another 3x1 "Trips" with TE AWAY (x-X-H on one side, & Te on backside) - you slide TO the TE.
If you are in 2 TE's & 2 WR's (2x2 set) - you could slide EITHER way (if 7 in the box - slide to the side of 4 men as opposed to sliding to the 3 man side). If you are in a 3 WR & 1 TE (2x2) set - slide TOWARDS the TE. We determine slide thusly by scouting report.
Bill, thanks for pointing that out about formation dictates. I had just sent an email privately where we were talking about trips (3 x 1) and guess I had fixated on that. Thanks for having my back!

You are saying that a tackle could block an OLB if there is a TE on his side, but if it is an open side tackle then you don't want him blocking the OLB?
PPS: What you see a LOT of is a "Nickel Blitz/Cover 0" look (4 guys to each side of the Center) with the F/S cheating down on ONE of our TE's (to cover him man). You MUST put the call to the side the F/S aligns - because the will bring FOUR from that side EVERYTIME. On the other side - they will only bring THREE, because someone has to cover the other TE.
The following is from our Coaches' Notebook: ("SLIDE PRO")
WHEN NO SAFETIES ARE DEEP ("COVER 0" BLITZ LOOK TO US) — MUST PUT PROTECTION CALL TO THE SIDE THE F/S ALIGNS ("RIP" = RT. & "LIZ" = LT.)! THIS IS PREDICATED UPON THE FACT THAT WHEN THE CENTER IS UNCOVERED HE BLOCKS TO THE SIDE OF THE CALL. THAT IS OBVIOUSLY THE SIDE THAT THE DEFENSE CAN BRING 4 BLITZERS, AND WE WILL HAVE 4 MEN IN PROTECTION TO THAT SIDE. AWAY FROM THE CALL THE DEFENSE CAN ONLY BRING 3 BLITZERS.
OPENSIDE OLB WILL TRY TO COME LIKE A "DAGGER TO THE HEART". OLB ON TE SIDE HAS TO CONTEND WITH THE BODY PRESENCE OF THE TE (DONNY WARREN WAS 6'7 & 265) & IS MOST LIKELY TOLD TO "CHUCK HIM" TO PREVENT A FREE RELEASE. THAT MAKES IT QUITE A BIT EASIER TO GET A TACKLE ON HIM. OF COURSE, THE TE CAN "CHIP HIM" ON THE WAY OUT ALSO!
ONCE AGAIN (READ MY EARLIER POSTS ON THIS THREAD) YOU CAN USUALLY TELL BY THE ALIGN OF THE SAFETIES AS TO WHICH OLB IS COMING (MOST ZONE TEAMS WILL NOT BRING BOTH) & ADJUST ACCORDINGLY! EVERYTHING IS BASED UPON FILM WORK, SCOUTING REPORTS, & PRESS BOX ON GAME NIGHT. "BE ABLE TO ADJUST IN A HEARTBEAT"!!!!!
IN BOTH OUR "BOB" AND "SLIDE" PROTECTIONS - WE WANT THE CENTER BLOCKING TO THE FOUR MAN SIDE EVERYTIME!!! NOW IF THERE ARE FOUR MEN TO BOTH SIDES - IN "BOB" WE WANT THE CENTER BLOCKING AWAY FROM THE CALL, AND IN "SLIDE" WE WANT HIM BLOCKING TO THE CALL. TO SEE THIS - DRAW IT DOWN & IT WILL MAKE SENSE.
that makes sense, but it one of your other posts you said that if the center is uncovered he blocks away from the call, while the back goes to the call. Or am I mistaken?
COACH JOE - IN "BOB" IF CENTER IS UNCOVERED HE BLOCKS AWAY FROM THE CALL & RB BLOCKS TO CALL.
IN "SLIDE" IF CENTER IS UNCOVERED IT IS EXACTLY OPPOSITE. CENTER BLOCKS TO CALL (IN DIRECTION OF SLIDE) & BACK BLOCKS AWAY FROM DIRECTION OF CALL. CALL = "RIP" (RT) OR "LIZ" (LT) FOR LINE.
ahh so in Slide the center is blocking to the slide side and the back is going to the Man side? Usually I refer to the slide side as the backside but your way makes sense too.
Are they sliding from the first uncovered lineman? And the QB has the power to change the direction of the slide too right?
COACH JOE - NOT SURE I UNDERSTAND YOUR FIRST QUESTION. BOB = MAN PROTECTION, & SLIDE = ZONE PROTECTION. IN "SLIDE" - LINE BLOCKS ONE WAY & RB BLOCKS OPPOSITE THE DIRECTION OF THE SLIDE (EITHER FROM THE "BUBBLE", OR EMLOS - DEPENDING ON THE LOOK).
THESE ARE TWO DIFFERENT PROTECTIONS. YOUR QUESTION SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE UNDER THE IMPRESSION WE HAVE MIXED THE TWO.
IN "SLIDE" - QB DOESN'T NEED TO CHANGE DIRECTION EXCEPT IN A 2x2 SET (2 TE/2 WR SET - WHERE HE HAS A CHOICE). LOOK UP ON THIS PAGE TO MY POST AT 3:13 PM - IT EXPLAINS WHAT THE QB DOES ON SLIDE. THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME HE KNOWS BY FORMATION WHERE TO CALL SLIDE (IN HUDDLE).
IN "BOB" HE CAN MAKE A CHANGE ("OPPOSITE" CALL AT LOS) ACCORDING TO THE SAFETIES. THIS (KNOWING WHERE THE SAFETIES ARE) ISN'T A FACTOR IN "SLIDE" - BUT THE FORMATION IS.
NOTE: IN A 3 WR SET - WE ALWAYS PUT THE CALL "BOB" AWAY FROM THE TE. IN A 3 WR SET WE ALWAYS CALL SLIDE TO THE TE.
THIS STUFF IS SO SIMPLE (ONCE YOU LEARN IT) THAT MY GRANDSON'S MIDDLE SACHOOL TEAM (GRADES 6 THRU 8) COULD EXECUTE IT!!!
PS: LET ME MAKE SOMETHING CLEARER. THIS THING OF QB'S CHECKING OFF THE COVERAGE IS DONE, BUT NOT NEARLY AS MUCH AS YOU WOULDF BELIEVE. IFG YOU TRULY STUDY YOUR OPPONENT, AND SET A GAME PLAN (BY FOTRMATION) THAT DICTATES THAT YOU OPPONENT ALIGN IN A CERTAIN FASHION - THGEN YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFOREHAND 95% OF THE TIME WHERE TO CALL THE PROTECTION IN THE HUDDLE.
ADDED TO THIS - THE PRESS BOX KEEPS A "KEEN EYE" (ESPECIALLY FOR MAN/BLITZ SITUATIONS) & CAN ALERT US IF THE QB IS "MISSING SOMETHING".
YOU ARE GOING TO THINK I'M LYING, BUT I AM NOT. I CAN COUNT ON ONE HAND THE NUMBER OF TIMES AN OPPONENT ACTUALLY BROUGHT FOUR PEOPLE TO A SIDE AGAINST US!!!!! OUR FORMATIONS (ONE BACK) & "BLITZ-BEATERS" DISCOURAGE THAT. ALSO, THERE IS NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER THAT A DEFENSE HAS A MUCH GREATER TIME DISQUISING BLITZ VS A ONE BACK TEAM THAN A TWO BACK TEAM!!!!!
COACH JOE - READ MY POST ABOVE FROM 9:52. "SLIDE" CAN BE GAME PLANNED TO BE SLIDE BACK FROM THE BUBBLE (WITH RB CHECKING BUBBLE), OR JUST FULL SLIDE (RB GETS EMLOS OPPOSITE SLIDE).
MORE OFTEN THAN NOT - WE JUST FULL SLIDE. THIS IS IT IS EASIER TO DO VS THE LOOKS WE SEE.

CHECK MY POST OF 9:52 (ABOVE). "SLIDE" CAN BE GAME PLANNED TO SLIDE BACK BEGINNING AT THE BUBBLE (WITH RB CHECKING LB AT BUBBLE), OR A FULL "SLIDE" (WITH RB BLOCKING EMLOS OPPOSITE THE SLIDE).
BECAUSE OF WHAT WE SEE - WE ALMOST ALWAYS FULL SLIDE.
