flexbone option to Gun option

We are a spread option team (like Navy). Our plan is to incorperate both 4-5 base runs out of each. Reads are reads. We are exclusively an option team. I think both can work as many of the skills carry over. I would like to touch base with both of you.

You put my thoughts on paper for me. Attacking both sides of the formation, easy read, more of a passing game etc

I am really thinking of changing over. Watching Utah cut ups and installation tapes and reading the gun option manual. The more i watch the more I am convinced it is the way to go.

I feel that the reads in the gun are much easier to learn for a QB than the traditional veer reads. The DE is pressured to move right now on who he will make a play on. Does he go hard down the line or sit and play backside contain. Because he is so much further from the point of attack than say a 5 tech vs Inside veer in the flexbone he has to commit NOW. He can't try to play games like vs. inside veer because he is not being run at, he is run away from. As a result the reads are easy cause if that DE has any kind of a coach he is either gonna tell him to be hard down the line all the time, sit all the time or try to play a game. It is just easier because the play attacks both sides of the formation. The read man has to be more definitive in his read to be effective. Also the QB has no lateral movement, upon disconnect from the FB he is a downhill runner right now. The reads are easier. As for the linemen: they have less rules to learn since you are running a regular base running play to the play side. As opposed to having to learn trap, iso, counter, Power, sweep etc plus Inside and Outside veer rules, you eliminate the inside and outside veer rules and just run Iso front side and option the backside end. It gives less for the linemen to learn, you cut down on your number of plays and thus can rep the heck out of the ones you do run. I like it because I used to have to scedule an Option period, Run Period and Pass Period. Now option and Run are all in one so I get double the reps of my option and run plays. It is great for the linemen because even if it is a pull read they get a rep of running one of the above plays.

Do you run any jet. If not I would recommend it. It is just a great compliment to opition in the flex or spread offense.

Why would you want to move towards running some flexbone out of the gun stuff? Would it be a good goaline compliment or a good change of pace deal if all you ran was jet, and osv, and zone dive option?

Ucbears made good points about the gun stuff. I agree with most of them. I want to know more about flexbone stuff and see what you guys that run it would have to say about its strengths.

I know this. I love watching the flexbone stuff more than any other offense. ANY.

I just don't know the ins and outs of it beyond basic x/o's to be able to tell if it would be a good thing to meld into the gun stuff I am already doing.

Galdapran, we just have the qb catch it and step forward and either hand it off underneath, or long hand fake if we are running counter or zone-t.

Are you thinking of zoning it or pulling?

Against a 50 team, pulling appears to be necessary.
Against any other look, zoning is pretty easy.

Just wondering what you are looking at doing.
I might be able to bounce a few ideas back and forth with you.
