anyone have any info on the Fly/Jet Sweep out of Shotgun, how to time it up etc. I am thinking about it and wondering if anyone does it by just coming in regular jet motiton with the QB in gun and the Jet back taking the snap directly off the center's butt. Also interested in the traditional deeper motion. in front of a shotgun QB
Any Info is appreciated

I have run the jet from gun before and sought out many people at clinics that have run it to ask them more. The two main ways that I have found people time it out are,

1. have the qb call the snap when the jet is over the OT, catch it, and give it to the jet guy

2. have the qb give the leg to start the motion, and have the center snap it on a silent count

both take time to work out, and I have seen the jet guy get there a little early and take the snap on the run before the qb could catch it, but I would not want to time it out where it goes directly from center to jet guy,,, just would have to be too precise, would make the jet guy slow down which kinda defeats the purpose of the jet.

I think you almost have to have the qb be the adjustor. He can feed it to the jet guy after the snap much easier than the jet guy could time it up and catch it perfect.

We have run the gun jet a bit in practice and will look to implement it more next year. It has been run against us by a couple of teams and the main observation we can give regarding timing of the handoff is this:

The jet gun does not have to be as finely timed as the regular jet from under center. The motion can be faster. Becuase the motion man is going faster he can be a bit later and still get the handoff in good shape.

I don't know if it will give you the information you want but at least it's a visual.

I liked it so much I added another blocking scheme to the two different jet series that we are working on.

We ran the jet last year from gun at the end of the year and it worked really well for us. We averaged a little over 10 yds per carry with it. We timed it to where the qb called for the ball when the motion man was at the backside B gap. It seemed to time up pretty well. We did have better success with this play when the mesh occurs immediatly after the snap is received though. This will be more of a staple this year. We also have a reverse off of this with the FB, works real well when the defense is overly concerned with stopping the jet.

I know that Utah pulled the backside guard much like a power but, did anyone see how the playside tackle blocked the play? Did he block the 5 tech or release inside etc. I did not get a chance to tape the game.

on the shovel option with another option outside the qb, the blocked it like speed, inside release, qb i am assuming read the end, if the end closed on the inside shovel pass option man, then qb kept and read the next threat outside,

ingenious play, could take a while to work it, but if you ran jet almost exclusively it would be a series to throw in there for sure

yer, did you guys have an extra option added onto the shovel?

- What have you packaged with it in the form of counters and playaction?

- Do you have you QB step up for the mesh?

- Does it work better out of certain formations?

- Are there any tapes or books dedicated specifically to the jet/fly sweep package out of the gun like Demeo's tapes on the triple out of the gun?

Thanks Killer. I've been looking over the Fiesta Bowl tape and saw on the QB sweep, that Utah motioned the playside slot and cracked on the defensive end. They pulled both the playside guard and tackle around the crack to lead for the QB. It seems that this would be a similar way to block the fly sweep. How do you guys block it?

for zone guys, any pulls other than just gt, are just extra complications

i was looking through the 101 wing t plays tonight, looking for ideas, sometimes the wing t stuff bugs me but a lot of it is beautiful

we have our bsg pull on speed option out of gun, just trying to get someone else in the way

is the one i described what you are calling the crazy option? If so, I can see how that may help the back groove in there and gets you an extra blocker. It might be a little too congested to have a puller and the shovel work though. I don't know. I would have to run through it with some people.

I have heard that name applied to other things crazier than this sound play. I really like it. I am looking at a version of it where you start jet motion then the jet guy turns back and you run it into that to take advntage of fast rotating secondary.

One of the foremost guys on the Jet/Fly sweep (though not out of gun) is Mark Speckman of Willamette University in Oregon. he doesn't run the Wing-T but the "Fly Offense" which is really of the same family but everything is predicated on the Fly or Jet motion.

There are numerous ways to block it and I think in can be done probably the same way from gun. He has some tapes out on Coaches' Choice- "The Fly Offense vol. 3 "the Sweep".

Depending on formation - to sweep wide he has every one crack and FB lead to corner (231 sweep).
WR blocks the #2 defender, Slot rec. blocks #3 defender and FB has #1 defender. (better have a quick back- sweep guy takes a bow step after he gets the ball to get on the blocking back's hip.)
You can block it any number of ways by using numbers for blocking assign. 21 sweep- WR blocks #2 def and second guy (slot, wing) goes out to block Corner.

I'll have to look at the tape again but I think the line track blocks to the play side.
This is all for what Speckman calls "green" sweep- fast and to the outside.
They have their "yellow" where the sweep man reads his blocker to see whether he cuts up or gets out
and "red"- for DEs that fly up field-

It is out of doubles gun. It is out of a zone dive option series. This series has the rb get the ball or fake on a dive to the midline then the jet guy (#2) gets the ball or fake.

Fullzone blocked on the zone dive option series. With tags that enable it to act like veer, midline, follow, qb inside zone, qb stretch all predicated on flow and putting the linebackers in conflict. Do they go with the jet? Do they stay and respect the dive?

Then I want to add the utah option with speed option blocking to mess with the de.
All with jets.

Add in the full flow series where the jet guy gets the ball first and the rb goes for force with a toss, inside zone, counter gt, dart, and qb stretch all from multiple formations and I think I may have an offense that can be variable with the talent on hand.

Using different terminology than I, that does sound like a great offense. Very similar to the one I am trying to put together. THe big difference in our offenses is the blocking. We are a man vs your zone. We tried zone a couple of years ago with no success. Small quick guys do not move people into the backers.

Warrior, I wish we had quick. If it was under center I think it would be a big issue to get movement into linebackers, vertical movement allows for vertical holes there. Let's just say some of my guys are not the brightest in the world, so it is more of an emphasis for us to have them clear on what they are doing and be able to just GO. I guess I just believe in zone so much that I don't think vertical push out of the gun is that big a deal. Just, stay on the blocks. Linebacker flow is one of the reasons to run the jet in the first place in my mind. I don't think there are many hs linebackers that can play with the discipline to get to the jet and play the complimentary run game well. I think it comes from my inside/outside zone two te/oneback background. Just watch the flow, see where to hit them. Let the backs run where they are not.

Me and you need to get together and at least discuss actions in the backfield. And we might get some good ideas for different blocking things each of us could use.
