Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
If I'm not correct please due tell but the Broncos have one zone play they read the dl and get one cut and just full zone right. This is what Rick Trickett told me. In my opinion this is superior to pure inside and outside because the aiming points can be the same.
pretty much, they call it their wide zone play (18/19 strong or weak). Back reads the DE to determinwe whether or not to go outside (doesn't happen often) then he reads the next d-lineman inside for his cut read.
They also run a tight zone play (14/15 strong or weak) but it isn't run nearly as much as the wide zone.
He is the OL coach at West Virginia. I teach the broncos new way. I used to get like to run stretch at a 7 so i can lead step the tight end and get him to outside linebacker and let the tackle get the wrap on the 7 and put the fb on the force. On inside zone i vs. like 4-3 I would put the center and backside guard on a backside linebacker vs. a weak shade and put the fb on mike but this way is superior. In my opinion(worthless) but nonetheless my opinion
I am the hip of the tackle all the time. I got my stuff from Phil Fulmer like 15 years ago. As far as the reads and how to zone and what not. I've changed very little just don't try to force the issue as much. Stretch the old way i used to teach was good but I liked to try to get to the outside a little more than i should but i like this new way better.
Oneback gives a great description of the lineman techniques and the backs reads. Everything he posted is in the Gilman gear tapes along with game film of some wide zone plays and Coach Gibbs diagraming the runs vs. certain fronts.
Zoneman,
what does Fulmer teach? I'd be interested to know how he blocks the zone plays. email me at dmx315@aol.com
Zoneman - hip of the tackle is the way to go on INSIDE ZONE, but you need more of a "pull" on thre OUTSIDE ZONE if you are going to piggyback the covered teammate. Can't block both plays the same!
Man i just run one play i should have made it clear i'm talking about how i do it now. I understand the stretch but i like the way i do it now. That's just me.
Well what i used to do is say there is a weak shade ok. Well i would lead step the center and then let the backside guard get the wrap and put the center on willie and the pg would have the three by himself and fb would have mike. That' s what i used to do on inside zone.
Zonerman - you are not the only person who wishes to combine those two plays into one (for simplification). Dennis Erickson did it at Washington St, but when he became HFC at U of Miami - he felt the need for both.
If you have not watched the Alex Gibbs video, you might enjoy it - whether it changes your mind or not. Coach Joe has it - arrange a trade with him!
NO honestly I agree with you. This is how I have done zone. I had inside zone (hip of tackle) and stretch (three yards outside te) then i talked to Rick Trickett last spring. He showed the wide zone i guess. I am interested in what Alex Gibbs has to say because like vs. that base their spilling everything anyway i know that weak shade wouldn't be in the rb read anyway. See what i usually do is like if their is a weak shade then i just coach the bg to run him up and we'll zone the three with the c and pg like you said and zone the t and te on the 9. Um I would like to see Alex Gibbs videos because i can call the tight zone what i called inside zone. Bill listen I really appreciate you telling me this I just worry about my guys and don't worry about different offenses or what not one because i'm not paid to and also i don't think i would be a good coach if i had to coach all 7 of these guys and try to run an offense. But I am going to look into this and I really appreciate it.
Alex Gibbs was O-Line coach under Dan Henning with the San Diego Chargers BEFORE going to Denver. Dan Henning has been a personal friend of mine since he did his STUDENT TEACHING under me in 1964 (when he was a Senior in college). I followed what Dan (& Alex) did at San Diego - which was the Joe Gibbs offense 100%! Alex gained fame with the Bronco Super Bowl teams shortly after leaving San Diego.
What he ran at Denver was not really any different than what he ran at San Diego EXCEPT - he refined the Ouside Zone, & ran it better than anyone in football that did'nt use "pullers" (like the Colts do so well with Howard Mudd).
I LOVED High School coaching. Another reason I never wanted to coach in major college or NFL is that (like John Madden) I don't fly!!!!! Some of you may remember when the whole Marshall University football team was killed in a plane crash about 35 years ago. Two of my former high school players, & one of the coaches who was a close friend perished in that crash. Along with that, a 737 jet I took to Atlanta (in 1975) ALMOST went down & that was enough for me!!!
I spoke at a clinic in New Jersey (Lawrenceville Prep) in the mid 1990's & they wanted to fly me up - I took an Amtrak train!!!!!
