Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Did you TAPE the game? If so - go to the long TD run on the WIDE ZONE by Warrick Dunn(9:58 in the 2nd quarter) & tell me which linemen dop stepped (give me their number & position). Once you do this - I can explain WHY that individual(s) drop stepped (there are circumstances that force a particular individual to do so).
If you ever come thru Virginia - stop by & I'll show you close to FOUR hours of coaches' cutups of A. Gibbs Super Bowl Broncos running those 2 plays.
Steve Loney (O-Line coach with Vikings) says "SOME of our linemen naturally take a short drop step & others don't, BUT I AM NOT ALLOWED TO TEACH IT!!!!!
If they were running a FORCE with the Wide Zone its possible. It just so happened I was copying Alex Gibbs' Wide & Tight Zone tapes during the game...although I missed a bunch of it due to promised 'family time' (which allow me to watch tomorrows 2 games), I have seen a number of the highlights.
In his tapes Gibbs talks about the adjustments that happen when a Force is on the Wide/Tight zones. A number of times I saw them perhaps running it with the Force on - where the FB will block the force player playside, and that can allow the other 'zone' schemes to rotate more backside. he has many different wrinkles and adjustments. If you haven't seen his tapes I HIGHLY suggest you check them out - it makes understanding what they're doing much easier
That's my 'guess' as to what happened.
My guess #2 could be that the 3 technique was slanting hard to the outside - getting the Duece combo there is a way to clean it up.
Bill -> would it be the uncovered guys likely the ones that were drop stepping?
Zoneman & Coach Joe - look at that long run (with 9:58 to go in second quarter) on Wide Zone to right. The ONLY man who drop stepped was #83 (TE) on a WIDE EDGE RUSHER (2-3 yds outside of TE - tilted in at a 45 degree angle & coming like a bat out of hell). If you listen to Bugel, Grimm, John Matsko, A. Gibbs, ETC. - that becomes a NECESSITY. Also true of openside tackle vs same scenario on zone to THAT side.
Some great O-Line coaches preach the drop step (McNally, Howard Mudd, Larry Beightol, Etc.) but I don't believe in it. It is academic, & everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Joe, YOU have A. Gibbs' tape. Doesn't he say "WE DON'T DROP STEP BECAUSE IT GIVES TOO MUCH PENETRATION"?? Also - check the numerous cutups of Terrell Davis running the Tight & Wide zone with the Broncos!!!!!!
PS: ZONEMAN - for the third time, where do you coach. You asked that same question of me & I answered. Would appreciate your returning the favor!
They zoned a 3 technique BACKSIDE. A. Gibbs' exact blocking call on THAT is "SCOOP". I did not see the ON T & ON G zone a 3 technique on a pure ZONE play!
VERBATIM QUOTE FROM ALEX GIBBS (2002): FROM HIS VIDEO ON THE "WIDE ZONE":
"WE DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE DROP STEP BECAUSE IT ALLOWS TOO MUCH PENETRATION. WE "OPEN STEP" WITH THE NEAR FOOT & AIM THAT FOOT & OUT HAT FOR THE HAT OF THE DLM ON OUR OUTSIDE TEAMMATE"!!!!!
They just took my guy Brian to the locker room with cramping and for fluids as he had the flu earlier in the week. Played a solid game! Lito is having a good one, got beat early on but came back to have a good solid effort as well. Pass pro has been superb all day long! Vikings couldn't handle the blitz.
