A frined at a big HS in Fla said the best thing they worked out was to keep it simple with an opposite call and mirror the original call. Didn't think to ask about what to do in a passing situation.

One thing you must consider. With a lot of shifts, motions, & different finished formations - it is sometimes difficult to audible to anything. Joe Gibbs went thru his first 3 Super Bowls (& the 83 season in which he set the NFL scoring record) with TWO audibles: 1) Run Audible = "DRAW" (base zone/draw); 2) Pass Audible = "HITCH". He felt that these two staple plays could be run from ANYTHING! Not bad thinking!

WHEN JOE GIBBS SAID THAT IF HE COULD GO INTO A GAME AND COULD ONLY RUN ONE PLAY, HIS CHOICE WOULD BE THE HITCH, WOULD INDICATE TO ME THAT IT IS A PRETTY GREAT PLAY! THEISMANN SAID HE DIDN'T LIKE HIS RECEIVERS READING MUCH, AS HE WAS NEVER SURE THEY BOTH WERE SEEING THINGS THE SAME WAY. I DO BELIEVE IN TEACHING THE RECEIVERS TO READ AND PUT IN AN AUDIBLE IN THE PSL TO INSURE THAT THE RECEIVER WOULD RUN WHAT THE QB WAS SEEING. IF THEY ARE NOT SEEING THINGS THE SAME, THE RECEIVER HAD BETTER NOT FOOL THE QB (AS DAN FOUTS LIKED TO SAY) AND RUN WHAT THE QB AUDIBLES HIM TO. MY TEACHING HAS ALWAYS BEEN THAT THE QB AND HIS RECEIVERS MUST BE ON THE SAME PAGE FROM DAY ONE. BY REPPING DAY AFTER DAY AGAINST ANY DEFENSIVE SCENARIO THAT MIGHT TAKE PLACE, THERE IS NO REASON THEY SHOULD NOT READ IT THE SAME,IMO. THEN, LIKE JOE DOES, COME UP WITH A PLAY THAT HE FEELS IS A GOOD ONE AGAINST ANY DEFENSE THEY CAN THROW UP THERE (HITCH) YOUR IN PRETTY DARN GOOD SHAPE. WHEN THEY BECOME AS ONE (QB + RECEIVER) YOU CAN DO AWAY WITH AUDIBLE ALL TOGETHER AND KNOW THAT THE RECEIVER WILL BE WHERE THE QB EXPECTS HIM TO BE AT THE FINISHED POINT OF HIS ROUTE, WITH CONFIDENCE.

when you say invert are you refering to one of the OLB's in the 4-4?? what is considered normal depth and why would that impact whether you run inside or outside?

Like the COUNTER better to "shade"! The POWER ends up to 3 tech side because there is USUALLY a "3" on TE side!

We play some teams that play games with the DE and Inverts (OLB). If they align the invert closer to line and tighter to the formation the DE is 99% of the time slanting into C Gap. So now we can down with the TE and skip pull the OT to the invert and kick him out with the center pulling up behind the kickout block. If the invert is playing normal depth then the DE will play hard outside on our TE and now the zone play is $$$ to the TE side. The TE and OT will both zone combo the DE to the invert, but usually it is too late for the invert to get involved in the play.
