I am going to ask this question on the running game forum also. With all the good discussion on the lead step and drop step I want to ask a question. Could someone inform the specifics of the lead step? Is it a 45 degree step regardless of where the defender lines up? You guys coach me up on it. I am interested in the lead step specifics covered or uncovered callside or backside.
We teach a six-inch, 45 degree lead step to the hole. For example, if we are running strong side A Gap, the right guard will step with his left foot and the C will step with his right foot.
Everyone "steps to the hole".
The initial 6-inch 45 degree lead step is followed by a power step/punch. If we lead step with the right foot, we are punching on the left foot. If we lead step with the left foot, we are punching on the right foot.
