Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
The real question is not how many formations you have but how effectively can you teachyour offense? You are always better off doing a few things well than a lot of things "OK".
Does that make sense?
Also, from a defensive perspective, multiple formation offenses always have tendencies. Coaches will usually only do 2 or 3 things out of each formation tipping the defense of the offensive intent before the snap.
I have 22 formations that I both run and throw out of. Thats 44 counting each side. We don't just run a few plays out of each, as your absolutely correct about setting tendencies. Now, to be certain, we use certain formations more than others, but not so much more than to have our opponents only have to prepare for those. It takes hours upon hours of preparation in both the class room and on field practice to run an offense like ours, and I know you do not have the luxury of that much time on the HS level. But, for me it has been very, very good and I don't ever plan on changing it. Just my way.

Jared, if your a youth coach, I think 10 is way to many. If not, then I would say no. The young kids have to have time to be taught the basics of football, not advanced offensive schemes. Just my opinion. Coach Easton

When I was running the no-huddle gun 5 wide spread with my 8th graders we had one formation and made the #3 shift to the field based on where the ball was placed. We ran three passes (RAID,BANE, and Tiger) throwing the whole game. We usually did this becasue the other teams had some really big boys (i mean farmboy big) who were slow and tired easily. If the big DTs cant run pass rush the whole game and cant get out of the game, it makes for easy pickings. Good luck.
