Heres a great question for you Gun Option and Urban Meyer fans?

If you are talking about what I think you are, the crazy option, Utah KILLED Pitt with in the Fiesta Bowl. So I'd say yeah, hit the guy with the shovel pass. I see it really being no different than the first read in the veer.

Northwestern will do both. If they are in one back then it is a true QB read with no pitch man. If they are in 2 back, then the back who is not running the zone path will run behind the qb and get into pitch relationship. But you are rigtht, I don't think I have ever seen them use the slot to get into pitch relationship.

I think you can do both. Have a call that puts the slot into the pitch relationship, rather than block downfield. We have even had the slot run a bubble route and had the qb read the invert (olb), if he starts to cheat and chase the qb pulled the ball and threw the bubble.

out of curiosity, what is your call for them to block and the call for them to get into pitch relationship, and what kind of success did you have with throwing that bubble look?

using the slot as the pitch is one of the conrnerstonses of what we try to do. Utah does it. It makes the play a true triple option ond just gets that one more threat on the perimeter. The old addage is that when you have 2 on 1 there are three ways to bet by him, One Block him , Two Option him, or three throw over him. I think it is easier to option with the slot than to have him stalk block even though you help the block with flow away on the fake to the set back. It really attacks the perimeter NOW also.

My bad Coach E. After seeing Tog's post I realized what you mean. Yeah, Arkansas ran it alot. They called it the Radar if I remember correctly. It really worked well last year when they had a converted RB as a slot WR.

Well, it's just theory right now. We've been looking at all the Utah stuff. We're gun, no huddle. We feell like we've been doing well with zone, trap, dart (with QB keeping), and speed as our base run plays. We read the backside DE on our zone play with the slot backpeddling. But we do like the idea of adding the orbit motion, "crazy" option and the jet sweep (with it's motion).

We really like the prospects of using the shovel pass out of the "crazy" option to get underneath those teams that are getting upfield. I'm close to being sold on how Utah pulls the backside guard and also on the steps they use in the backfield.

We also like the idea of adding the jet sweep for those teams that load the interior - having another key (the motion, which could be false), another threat ... that the defense needs to worry about. From looking at the jet sweep thread, there seems to be a lot of ways to do it. I haven't even seen it on tape. Do you guys run it and how has it been?

If I ever get finished with my own cut-ups, I'd be interested in trading tapes with someone for some ideas with the "crazy" option and jet sweep. I'm a few weeks away. I want to finish up recruiting and set some annual projects straight. This board has been a great resource for me also. I just started looking at the offensive forums. We run the 30 stack and I've gotten a lot of ideas from that forum.

We will do it both ways....drop the slot receiver into pitch profile or let him block downfield. Alot of the times we base it on the QB...if we have a QB who is a more effective runner, we will block....if he is average, we will pitch. But we game plan it also.

Coach E, I worry about the slot getting in pitch relationship if he pauses and reads his key because it happens so fast. But, I think it can be done with a good athlete.

Coach, get your hands on one of Tony Demeo's (sp?) books. He runs the triple option from single back gun. We've been running his version of the triple gun option for two years now and have had quite a bit of success.
