Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I'm a New Varsity Head Fotball Coach and I'm in the process of getting my staff together. I've coached HS for 12 years and have been an Off. Coord. for 7 years and coached DB's on defense. I've worked in the 4-3 defense most recently, but I have worked and played in the 5-2 defense. I'm looking to find a defense that is best suited for HS Football and a very run oriented league(mostly "I" and Wing-T). Which defense do you think is best and why? I'm am partial to 7 man front though, I like the fact of a 4 man secondary and being able to do different coverages and alignments with the SS and FS. Any info. would be appreciated.
On another point, I'm looking to hire a Def. Coord. During my interview with the DC's, I will ask and talk about the defenses they feel most comfortable with and have worked in. If I find a coach who is loyal, committed and willing to work hard, but has coached in the 4-4 or 5-3 his entire career, do I still tell him I want the 4-3 or 5-2 or go with what he feels best being a coordinator in? I'm not talking about bending or giving up my authority as the Head Coach, but whats best for the DC and the teaching process.
If you're not locked into one particular defense at this stage, I would think you'd want to evaluate what type of kids you'll have in your program and what types of offenses you'll be facing when considering what to run on that side of the ball. As many of the coaches on this board would say, "there are a great many ways to skin the same cat" with results that will be successful for you. I'm also a big believer in the addage that "it's not how much you know about the game but how well you know what you coach". I think in most cases the type of defense you run is less important than the ability of a coach to effectively teach it and get the kids to play it to their best abilities. Best of luck with your new program and putting together a great staff coach!

Considering the fact that you coach in a league that is mostly run oriented I would defenitly go with an eight man front. Now, there are many things that I would consider when deciding between the 53 and 44. Do you have more talented LB's or DL, which defense do you and your staff know the best etc, etc... Remember just because you say your base defense is a 53 doesnt mean you cant also run a 43. If you were to go with a multiple 40 front you could move your OLB's around and actually have both the 43 and 44 all in one.
You are never locked into one certain defense. All it takes is a little movement and you are in a different defense.
