Is there any defensive field fronts, that you would not run the ouside zone against? Or can you use formations to dictate the front to your advantage. We see 4-4, 5-2, and 5-3. We are a double slot, one back team. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks Skip
Coach - you ask a question that is WAY TO BROAD to answer via email. This takes a scouting report; LOTS of film work; etc.
BASICALLY it is a numbers game. HOW are you going to account for defenders in the box; secondary run support, etc.
One final thought: The best NFL line coaches I talk with say that 80% of the time you are running against an "OVER" (reduction strong side with B gap defended by a DLM) or "UNDER" look (wide to strongside with B gap defended by a LB), no matter WHICH defense you see. Plan your offense with THIS in mind.
I DO NOT wish to spark a debate - but for US - we have more success running the Inside Zone to the "Under" side (Alex Gibbs & Joe Bugel prefer this also), & equal success running the Outside Zone to EITHER "OVER" OR "UNDER". Others might disagree with this, but it based upon my experience of running these plays successfully since 1981! I cannot elaborate further via email, because there are TOO MANY "WHAT IF'S" (which drive me nuts)!
