Coaches,
I feel I am in kind of a bind. I have a great chance of being hired as the DC for our seventh grade team next year. Now, the thing is I am still in college studying to get my certification so I am forced to wait until any teachers currently on staff decide if they want to coach or not. There is a strong possibility that none of the facualty will take the job and then it will be mine, but...I dont know when the deadline is for staff members to make their decision. I am planning on making some calls and finding out when the deadline is but I am afraid I will be told that they dont have to make a decision until summer. If this is the case then I will be forced to pursue a job somewhere else. Do you guys think I will have any success finding a job at a different school while im still in college?

I would like to add this to my above post. What is usually the deadline for facuallty members to decide on a coaching job? As in approximate month of the year for both middle school and high school jobs? Also what are my chances of finding a paid varsity assistant job while im still in college?
Usually, the school will "fly" the job opening for 2 weeks. Every district is different, but offering the job for 14 days is typical. It is also often contractual. They probably already know, if anyone is interested. Schools want to fill positions as soon as they know their budgets. A lot of A.D.s know who they'd like to hire but getting him can sometimes be problematic. Nowadays, you have fewer and fewer teachers who desire, or are willing, to coach. As an administrator, I always looked to hire teachers who could do more than teach in a classroom. You may be just what they are looking to hire.
If you are the man they want, they will get to you. Call the A.D. and feel him out. If you have someone you can network with, at that or another nearby school, talk with them.

Thanks for the advice coach. Yesterday I was able to make some calls and get some things figured out. I won't know if I have the 7th grade job until April. After finding this out I called the head coach of another nearby school that I would like to coach at. I had a somewhat lengthy discussion with him and he seemed very interested in me. I believe I have a great chance at landing this job. This is an even better oppertunity because this job will be a varsity assistant job. I really think things are going to work out just fine. The school I am currently talking to is a great place with very nice people. I have done some observation/student teaching at this school and I really liked it there. I am very excited about the possibility of landing this job.
Coach Nicholson, I don't know anything about the population you're at, but if there are any more than these two schools, I would feel them out as well. Maybe just call to see if anything is available even if nothing is posted as being open. I'm a third year coach and teacher, but looking to move on, hopefully to a varsity assistant job. My first three years have all been at the freshmen level. Right now, I've applied to four schools that have the combination of English teaching and coaching open. Most have their deadlines coming up within the next few weeks, so I'm excited about the possibilities. I'm more willing to move than you are since you're still in school, but I would keep looking at options is case neither of these two work out.
