Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
my question is when facing a wing-t team that shifts there tight end (trades over) what should the defense do. Last year we slid our frotn and traded the strong outside backer and the weak outside backer...we play a 4-3. We feel that we looked somewhat like a chinese firedrill and added more confusion than anything. If we don't slift our backers we also feel that they (our opponants) are accomplishing what they desire in getting the miss match they want. I interested in how other coaches handle this.
Who cares if it looks like a firedrill. We would slide our front and not switch backers last year because there was no big difference between the two. This year we will probably switch the two to get the match ups we want. The TE has to reset, so there's time.
Be careful of the shifting of your defense, however. We have a TE trade out of our Pro-I look that we use quite often. If we notice a defense shifting around when we trade the TE, we have a variation we want to go to:
1. Walk the TE off the line and motion him across the formation just as if he were trading.
2. Make sure both the Z and the X are ON the LOS (in other words, we'll walk the Z up onto the LOS, but we won't walk the X back)
3. Have the offensive team practiced to go on "touch" and the QB will snap the ball when the defense is in the middle of shifting. Since both Z and X are on the LOS, it's just like having the TE in motion and it is perfectly legal.
4. We run a quick hitting Lead into the middle of the "chinese firedrill" when they are off balance and out of position. If the TE is still between the tackles, we have him lead through and clean up as well.
Coach, if you're going to flip flop your defense with the trade, make sure your CBs are trained to read the WR's alignments. If they don't walk off / walk up, expect something like this.
That's a good point, Coach. In our league I have only seen teams trade the TE. We have alway had time to trade and shift with the trade. Against TE motion, we wouldn't have a "firedrill", but would adjust to the change in strength with our linebackers.
