This tournament is in it's eighth year. Last year it was expanded to include an additional site and two consecutive Saturdays. 64 teams participated the first Saturday, 32 teams the second Saturday. The tournament is based out of Frederick, MD and has included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, D.C and Virginia. We have secured Saturday, June 11 for one of the dates and have not decided whether we will go with Saturday the 4th or Saturday the 18th for the other date.
The tournament is run much like a basketball tournament with two 16 team brackets at each site - 32 teams per site. After the first game, you go to either the consolation side or the championship side. So through the day, you're matched with your level of competition. Everyone is guaranteed four games in the day, basically an hour on, hour off. The tournament day begins at 9:00am and concludes at 5:00pm.
If you're interested in participating, I'd suggest you register early once information is distributed. A mailing will be done to all Maryland/D.C. schools and all past participants from surrounding states in March. Visit the MDVarsity.com site for more information as it's posted. It is a well organized, well run tournament.
Besides the website, Mark Thomas and Sheldon Shealer of MDVarsity have developed a successful annual preseason magazine (MD/DC Varsity Football) and a college recruiting guide (MD/DC Varsity Recruiting). Sheldon manages the Maryland State Rankings, the Maryland All-State selections and assists with the national Nike Combines during the spring. Both Mark and Sheldon also support the Maryland Football Coaches Association in managing the Maryland Junior Combine.
The tournament director is Vince Ahearn, head football coach at Frederick High School in Frederick, MD.
Here are the rules for the tournament:
Method of Play
1. Pregame coin flip determines team to start on offense.
2. Ball will always start on the offense 45 yard line (baseline) to start a possession. (This includes interceptions not returned for TDs).
3. Offenses must have at least 1 back/receiver lined up within imaginary tackles upon snap of ball.
4. Offense will be given 4 downs to make a first down (20 yard zones, 25 yard line & 5 yard line).
5. Offenses may have only 5 Eligibles, plus QB and Center (Center is optional).
6. The football must be thrown within 4 seconds with a center-quarterback exchange and within 3 seconds without a center-quarterback exchange. Officials
use electronic countdown timers on the field and will not count out loud. A sack occurs when the quarterback does not RELEASE the ball in time (if the timer
goes off with the arm in motion, it is a sack) play the next down from the previous line of scrimmage.
7. The ball is declared dead when the runner is tagged with one hand between the shoulders and the knees (including the hand and arm) or the ball touches
the ground.
8. All touchdowns are 6 points (includes interceptions for scores). No P.A.T..
9. Offenses may finish a drive started before time has expired only if they have a chance to win or tie.
10. Ties will be played immediately by method of sudden death overtime. Each team is given 3 plays with the team gaining the most yards winning.
Interceptions constitute a dead ball during sudden death.
11. Team with the most points at the expiration of time wins.
Rules of Play
1. Each game will be 45 minutes running time.
2. Offense has 30 seconds to put the ball in play.
3. No timeouts (with the exception of an official calling time for clarification, injury, etc.).
4. Mouthpieces are mandatory on the field of play.
5. No coaches or additional players are allowed on the field during play.
6. No running plays (QB may not run the football).
7. No blocking or screen blocking what so ever. Blocking constitutes a loss of down penalty.
8. The offense may pass the ball only once during a play. Double passes constitute an illegal forward pass.
9. Offensive players are responsible for retrieving the football after each play.
10. Defenders may bump receivers only once within 5 yards of the L.O.S.
11. Excessive contact during play or unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated and could be cause for the removal of a player or team from the tournament
