any of you guys run the rocket sweep?

ok...it might just be a terminology thing, but what is the rocket sweep? Is that the same as what some call the orbit sweep or is it something else?

This might be french to chinese here but i think orbit and rocket are just deep jets (or flys) behind the deepest back

same kind of idea as jet, just deeper so the guy can get downhill after getting to the edge

that is one of the reasons i like the jet out of the gun. accomplishes the same kind of idea

we run it and simply track block have our guys step at forty five and try to get to second level we have the playside tackle kick cross and get up to the safety if end gets in his him pocket we stay with him

Oh yes Popcorn Run or 48/49 in our book. Out of double slot our slot runs deep motion, qb reverses out flash fake to fullback going opposite play call and our line goes to second level to block the little guys our playside slot sticks and SE stalks. Our series includes a trap, PA Pass to toss, throwback, Playside slot sally, and Option withthe qb faking the pitch and running option instead. Any questions let me know.

The rocket is one of the best plays in football. We started running it last year and it was awesome. Why run the rocket?
1. If you do not have a lot of speed in your backfield this play allows average athletes to even look fast.
2. It offers a lot of problems to a defense. It is such a fast play that the defense has no choice, but to cheat on the play in order to stop it. Which leaves them open to the counter series
3. It is a great supplement play to the both spread option and wing t teams. Because it uses wing motion it can make all of your option plays and wing t run plays look the same.
4. Because the play hits so fast and gets big gains the CB now has to be a run or force player leaving open to play action pass.
5. It requires very little teaching. In that it is a non team play. You can have great success with it only using a few guys on your offense.
6. The backside of the defense can not hurt you. Even with the blitz. When I first heard that you can run this play and not worry about the c gap blitz I thought it was nuts. What we found out was that the play is so fast that it is in fact TRUE!!! Run it and see it with your own eyes.
Counter series off of the rocket:
1. WB counter: The QB reverses out and makes like he is tossing the ball to the back coming in motion and what in fact happens is he tosses the ball to the other wing back coming underneath the motion going in the opposite direction. The blocking scheme for this play is the power blocking with the FB kicking out EMOL and the backside guard pulling in lead up throught
2. FB dive: As the Qb reverses out to toss the ball to the WB in motion he will handoff the ball to the FB who is hitting the hole in the opposite A gap and then he carries out the toss fake and boots. The blocking here is inside zone.
3. Naked pass away: The QB reverses and fakes the toss. The FB runs away from the play faking the dive and runs a flat route away. After the QB fakes the toss he nakes out away from the motion and throws to either the flat recever/ Post corner receiver/ dragging receiver.
4. Rocket pass: The rocket executed as normal. The only difference is this time the WB is looking to throw the ball to the stalking receiver who slipped the CB who is forcing hard. The only difference we use is the FB must lead the play and not the front side guard because it is a pass we do not want any linemen down field. Plus the WB will yell go if he sees the CB has not forced and this tells the FB to lead the play and it turns into a run.

PS: easy to install with very little teaching. If your using outside zone, inside zone and power blocking schemes there is no new learning for your kids. Just apply the outside to the Rocket/ Power to the WB counter/ Inside to the FB dive.

I may be mistaken, but I believe orbit sweep is the slot man going in orbit motion around the QB while they run dart option; if the QB makes the keep read, the WRs motion around him puts him in the perfect pitch relationship for the option off the DB.

Urban Meyer ran this quite well at Utah.

I'm guessing that if the QB just holds up on his motion and just hands off the ball to the orbit man, that would be the orbit sweep?

Our popcorn 48/48 was the best play we had in our offense. Trap and screen the other way were also good to us. I actually went up to watch St. Francis, IN, and Georgetown, KY, play in the playoffs this year. they are two R & S teams and you would have loved watching them. Both of these head coaches are diciples of Red Faught! anyway, St. Francis was actually running popcorn 48/49 out of long motion instead of the orbit motion. The slot would go long motion and tap the QB. As soon as he got to the opposit G, he got about 2 yds depth, took the pitch and was off to the races. This pitch was obviously much flatter than our version of the sweep play. I have never seen this done, but wow, did it hit the perimeter in a hurry!

Maybe a crazy question, but...
From the gun, can you get a similar concept by throwing a quick flare to the running back ?

The question becomes how many pull there tackle instead of guard?
