What is your biggest challenge as a coach?

You have hit the nail on the head as to the character of many (players AND younger coaches) in this generation. I feel that's where we are challenged as motivators to find that button specific to each player or coach on our staff.
I think the hardest thing I am dealing with the past 4 years (along with others here on this thread) as a head coach is to find a suficient number of qualified (or at least motivated) assistants at all levels. I have two good ones as coordinators now, and am trying to fill our program with guys who want responsibility. I want to delegate things (with proper oversight at first) to give ownership to younger guys willing to come in and learn the game. Luckily, we have a recent college grad (& player) coming in to coach the Oline this fall, partly because we got him a job on campus while he works on his teaching credential. So, I guess I should be thankful for this new guy. If I could get one "real" guy on staff a year, that would be fantastic.

I don't see many younger guys seeing coaching as a "profession," which is where most of us here consider our calling.

Part of the dymamic I am seeing is guys who are willing to coach at lower levels, but they want to run their own stuff. I have a freshman three time league championship coach from our rival wanting to come back (now that we had a little success our first year) to take the freshman team, but the willingness to run our system on O and D isn't there. I've had two guys in three years want to come in at the freshman level, but not be accountable to the varsity program. We can't have that, unfortunately.

One thing's for sure, I think I'm blessed to be a coach and despite all the ups and downs, we are some of the luckiest men in the world, to be in our profession.
