Wing-T Stigma and Recruiting

THE CONCENSUS OF OPINION IS THAT THE WING -T IS A HS OFFENSE BUILT ON THE RUNNING GAME AND DOES NOT PREPARE THE HS QB FOR THE HIGH POWERED AND SOPHISTICATED PASSING ATTACKS OF THE COLLEGE GAME TODAY.

Arm strength is railed about by every scout that ever tested a prospect. But, talk about over rating one facet of a qb's NECESSARY skills, it is that one. When a college prospect goes to a pro tryout, the first thing he is asked to do is throw the deep out or post corner. From the middle of the field that is a throw of about 40-43 yds. that they want on a frozen rope! Yes, it tells you right now if the kid has a rifle, or a pea shooter for certain. But, I have always coached that ADEQUATE arm strength is sufficient. What good is it if a guy can throw it through a brick wall, but can't hit an open receiver at 25 yds. down the field? Good solid MECHANICS, DECISION MAKING, QUICK RELEASE, THE ABILITY TO BE ABLE TO BE TWO DIMENSIONAL (RUN AND THROW), INTELLIGENCE, WORK ETHIC, QUICK LEARNER OF NEW SYSTEM, DESIRE TO EXCEL, AND ABOVE ALL ELSE A PROVEN WINNER!!! THESE ARE THINGS TO ME THAT ARE MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN ARM STRENGTH. But, in the NFL, everything is being done on a computer profile for years now. It is also a very prevelant practice on the Div 1-A college level also. If your not 6'4 with an 80 inch wing span your not going to be an NFL offensive tackle, they want these long armed guys to be able to take a good power stance and control those blitzing LB's with those big long arms! I have seen many, many really great athletes be over looked because they don't fit the "profile". When my son played for Clemson, they had the #1 defense in the country in 1990-91. When that class graduated, 9 of the starting 11 went right to the NFL. THE VERY BEST PLAYER OF THEM ALL, A PLAYER BY THE NAME OF ROB BODINE WHO PLAYED NOSE IN AN ABSOLUTE OUTSTANDING MANNER, WAS OVER LOOKED BECAUSE HE WAS 'UNDERSIZED". What a bunch of garbage, they don't know what they cost themselves. Computer profiles are a very handy tool, granted, but they should never be the last word on a plyers chances of attaining his dreams.

Don't believe all of the crap you hear about the Wing T. A good player is a good player. Many HS Wing-T QB's have moved on to the College and Pro ranks with great sucess.

If I am not mistaken, I think Favre was even more cursed to play in a Wishbone, and his dad/coach didn't even want him to keep on the option very much. As for Wing-T scaring folks off. Even in the Tubby Raymond era Delaware QB's would average well over 20 passes a game. As for the SE who maynot have even played in a bone type of offense, I know of plenty of HS and college SE and HB/Flankers who were all-conference/all-americans-Nat Moore (primarily a HB then) and Wes Chandler (SE and HB) at Florida in the 70's and Tim Brown and the Rocket at ND in the 80's. If scouts are spending so much time looking at hs and jc systems and not at talent and character it says very little for college coaching. I shouldn't be shocked but it seems terribly short-sighted and in a sense mercenary.
