we are considering using these coverages against several of the teams we face this year that are running the wing-t. Was looking for pros and cons on this topic. we run a 4-4 defense mostly. Any help or suggestions would be great.
I don't think that man coverage is a good choice against the Wing-T. Due to the misdirection plays and the fact that the Wing-T is predominantly a running offense, I would think that you would not want your DBs and LBs turning and running with people. Cover Man will allow the offensive players to run your LBs and DBs off.
We see the Wing-T in 7 out of our first 9 games. We almost always play a Cover II or Cover III against these guys. In a zone scheme, your underneath defenders can pass off a receiver who might be trying to run them off and that defender will still have their eyes upfield on the offense instead of downfield on the receiver.
Is it double tight wing T? If so, I like the idea of bringing your SS (or whoever covers the TE on the wing side) down and jamming the tight end, then running with him if he releases. You have to have a fairly physical guy doing it, but it has worked for us. I think that if you drill your DBs on their keys, you can still stop the run / not get run off too much because now all the quick receivers are covered up. You can actually get a lot of people in the box if you do it this way, moreso than by playing cover 2 or three in my opinion.
