This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
....if this is the formation you're talking about there are lots of ways to protect it. We slide protect mostly, but will also step down against a heavy inside rushing team. I've also seen teams step out and let your PP take the inside man. There's lots of ways to get it done. Just communicate and rep, rep, rep...
The potential problem in protection from this "double slot" alignment is that the slots cannot get wide enough to keep their defender from rushing. Depending upon the protection cone, the defender may only have to run 15 to 18 yards to the block spot. Assuming a 5.0 forty, that's 10 yards every 1.25 seconds. Therefore, you can be to the block spot around 2.0 seconds. The snap and kick must be perfect to get it off. There are many block schemes to attacking a slide which would actually shorten the distance to the block spot.
I know many coaches are looking at a variety of punt formation after watching the bowl season ...... but the punt one of the most often used special teams plays in the game. I would really think through what you are trying to accomplish with your double slot:
- Need 4 gunners to make the tackles - Better formation to run fakes from - Easier to directional kick - Stresses the return team
etc.
Sorry I wasn't much help on the protection scheme.

Lyle is correct. There is little room for error when protecting a spread type punt. You have to rep the heck out of it. You also need a good snapper and a punter who can get the ball off quickly. However, it can be done. We are a spread punt team, but there are times you need to swallow your pride and go tight in order to make sure you get the ball off.
By the way, another good way to protect out of the spread is to fake a couple of punts early in the season. If you are scouted and seen faking some punts, teams are way less likely to try to an all out block. These were some of the best words of advice i got out of a special teams clinic one year.
