what is the worst and the dumbest thing a parent has said?

A parent called our head coach 2 years ago to tell us her son would not be at practice today because he had to ride the bus home after school and help "MAKE WOOD"!!! Our head coach reply's make wood? how on earth do you make wood, I know you can make paper from wood but this is new to me.

She reply's you make wood with a chain saw!!!

So to add to the list of good nick names behind closed doors we called the kid "the wood maker" not a good name for the avg 16 yr old male.

I had a similar incident about four years ago. I benched a kid who had skipped two days of practice during the week and his father, the town drunk, followed me home after the game and, with Jack Daniels on his breathe, tried to provoke me into a fistfight. Fortunately, nothing happened and I had witnesses so this clown couldn't make up anything.

A few years ago I had a parent that kept making smart a** comments during practice. This went on for a few days and it was getting to the point that the parent was becoming a disruption to our practices. This person even went as far as to yell at me when we were going through team because his son wasnt getting the PT that the parent thought his son should have been getting...remember this was just in practice, not even a game. I tried to be very professional and tell the guy that if he wanted to talk to me it needed to be done in private. Well there was just no getting through to this guy. During our next game he came down to the fence on the sideline and started making smart a** comments. He then decides to confront me after the game and tell me how pathetic I was and that I had no idea how to coach football. At this point I thought the guy was going to attempt to fight me. Finally we had to tell the guy we would have to call the police if he didnt settle down. After the threat of calling the police the guy walked off and kept his mouth shut at practices and games.

It is pretty sad that you have to threaten a parent with the possibility of calling the police to get him to stop embarrassing himself and his son. To top it all off his son was the worst player on the team. His son gave next to no effort in practice and he wouldn't listen to anything we tried to tell him.

A police car turned up to pre season training. Out jumped two officers and two young guys. They asked if they could sign up these kids explaining in private that they felt these kids are at a point where they could go either way in life and that maybe football could help. The officers explained that a couple of guys at the station chipped in to pay for their registration and insurance and that they hoped the discpline and structure we gave could make a difference.

One guy lasted 3 weeks, however, Brooke, despite his fowl mouth and argumentative nature stayed on. He was a handful at first...the dumbest thing he ever did was turn up to training with a .22 calibre rifle and ammunition - extremely unusual in Australia - saying that on the way home he was going to shoot his mums boyfriend. We talked him out of it and he kept coming to training and worked very hard at it becoming one of the better more intelligent players in the side despite the early difficulties.

He played a second season with us paid for by the Poilce who even came to a couple of games and followed his progress. Somewhere along the way we helped him get a job at McDonalds. He turned that job into a Managers Traineeship through his own efforts. Brooke even managed to win a State wide award for his work at Mc D's as the best trainee manager which he proudly brought to training to show the Coaching Staff. In the second season - the coldest night of winter he didn't show to training. About half way through the session here comes Brooke having done the second dumbest thing I have seen. His mothers boyfriend refused to bring him to training so he caught a bus to the train station armed this time with his football gear, caught a train and finally in the freezing cold walked 5km (about 3.5miles) just so he "wouldn't let the team down". While he admitted that he didn't have any money to pay for the bus or train fares he knew where he wanted to be.

I don't know where he is now but I know its a better place then where he so very nearly was.

You are exactly right. There is no doubt as to why the player I mentioned had a very poor attitude and work ethic. The worst thing about it all to me is that the parent actually thought he could do some good by acting the way he did...but in realitity all he did was make things worse for everyone involved. And as always the person who suffers the most is the kid.

My favorite would have to be the one that my running backs coach had this year. I was coaching my son's 7th grade team and I had a dad, who was a former Fresno CC RB and Navy Seal, working with my backs one practice. One of our RBs was a 6th grader and he came up to the dad and said that he could make this play run right and we should replace him on the depth chart, mind you the play was I form ISO play no less. The dad wasnt sure how to answer that so he sent the kid over to me. I got the same statement from the kid and asked him why he felt like he couldn't run this play. His answer was that there were people in his way whichever way he ran. I asked him if there was anything he could do to rectify that problem? He thought for a moment and stated that he would just run faster then until he hit something, then run a different way. Problem solved. SO our next game we ran that ISO play 8 times in a row with him in there and he did just that. Ran fast until he hit something then ran a different direction. He scored 3 TDS on 8 ISO plays.

Probably the best one i ever heard was a parent of one of our offensive lineman. Dad was very convinced of his son's athletic ability and it started between his sophomore and Jr years when the player approached the head coach during the off season and requested a change of position from Off Tackle to...QB! Now we are an option scholl and this kid is clocked with a calendar while running the 40. Eventually we talked him out of it and later that uear as his son was in a game we heard the distinctive voice of his dad yelling to his son and i quote "Use your speed".

The "worst" I've heard was between a Soph and Varsity game...

Parents from the Sophs were upset over the outcome at an away (far away) game. While the Varsity did pregame, several parents (some of the boosters) continued their tirade of profanity. When challenged by the HC to 'tone it down' - they got upset and said "Hey! We paid for our tickets - we can say whatever the %$!~ we want!" .....the HC later told the guy to come onto the field and 'talk about this'....the guy shut up and sat down.

Later, after the season, the AD gets on a rampage about how our player's behavior was out-of-control (swearing on the sideline).....yeah, thanks....it's not like the AD is in charge of the stadium / attendance issues, right?
