Coach,
I have just accepted a position as the OC for a minor league team. I have been coaching for 10 years, including the past 2 at a new HS program and I believe that this is a great opportunity to gain experience at a higher level of competition.
I played OLB for a very good NMFL team in the early 90's, so I know that the talent and sophistication found at this level is quite advanced.
We are having voluntary workouts on the weekends, and I will be going to my first and meeting the team on Saturday. The main focus of the workouts is conditioning, but I would like to spend a little time going over our basic offensive system.
My main question is:
How many plays should I expect my team to be able to execute in a game, given the limited amount of practice time we have. We can't officially practice until July, at which time we'll be going 3-4 times a week for 2 hours a day.
My personal belief is that I should stick a cohesive, flexible offense that allows for adjustments. For example: zone runs, play action off of the zone, and passing plays that have combo routes based on coverage. Rather than teaching 80 plays and only running 20 in a game, I think it would be better to stick with less plays that we can run in almost any situation.
What are your thoughts?
