Utilization of practice time is of utmost importance. You must have practice segments organized to the minute. Each segment should last approximately 5 minutes but not longer than 10 minutes in duration. Each segment should be coached to its fullest potential and once the period is over then you must proceed to the next period, no exceptions. By sticking to this routine, it forces coaches to coach hard and near game like situations.

Coaches are to get as much "talking" done as possible before going onto the field. You do not want to slow down the tempo of practice. Enthusiasm is a vital role in a good practice. By standing around and "talking" to your players will sometimes slow down their intensity. PLayers need to know that when they step onto the grass they must be a 150% player, as well as the coach being a 150% coach to his players. Your practices should be sharp, enthusiastic, with lots of hustle. This can only be possible if you have a "Unified Coaching Staff" demanding the same style of play. Be positive.... Coach up and make your players the best that they can be!

As a staff you must stress to your players the importance of great work ethic. If your opponent runs 10-100 yard sprints then you must run 12. It is my belief that if you are going to change the attitude of your players then you must change the attitude for what it takes to win. The little things make the difference, never compromise your beliefs, and the way you practice is the way you will play on game day. If you are to win on friday nights, then you must prepare monday through thursday your players; and monday through sunday as coaches. You must want to be fundamentally sound, physically and mentally tough.

Good points Coach and I certainly agree. However, I am at a smaller school than Westwood and we do not have the luxury of one-way players and coaches. Getting all of our offensive work in a 50-55 minute time slot is challenging for us. Any thoughts?

our biggest problem is the lack of knowledge of the game of football our scout squad kids know. i feel we waste alot of time getting the kids to run either the other teams off. or def. we are still trying to get our feeder programs ( jr. high and freshman ) to teach our kids the fundamentals and how the game is played. examples: routes and how they are run, hole numbers, dl alignment tech., pass drops of cov. 3, formation align. ...etc. but just this week we fixed the freshman problem, a veteran coach wanted to move down and take control. i feel our program improved immediately. now on to the bigger one. LOL

We try but I'm not sure we get enough reps to put in our complete package. If your time was constrained as ours is, would you decrease the amount of plays/formations in your playbook, or would you just limit your reps. Also, if you were to cut down on your playbook, where would you begin. Thanks for your help.

I would recommend analyzing your entire offense and make decisions on what would be your most effective schemes and eliminate any excess. Have a set amount of plays and work them throughout the year from a variety of formations and motions. I think this direction makes a lot more sense than having a wide assortment of schemes and trying to spread out the reps...I've done this and it just allows for poor execution and is not very productive. Set your offense around the option game and select complementary runs and passes off of it using a variety of formations and motions. Just a suggestion from an average mind.

We are a 3A school where all players play both ways..we have recognized the problem that we dont get enough reps during team and we want to fix that..the question is, how do you teach kids to read cards properly without slowing the tempo of practice..any suggestions will be greatly appreciated..

Practice showing cards now during the off-season....I like the idea of taking a 1 - 2 week period of time during the off-season and structure a sort of mini-camp to "practice how to practice"....what tempo is going to be expected during the year...how are kids going to move from one period to another...what are the purposes of the periods and what are the objectives...WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE SCOUT UNIT AND HOW DO YOU READ A CARD...etc. This really helps once the season starts...the kids have been schooled and have a better grip on the entire routine. pdow

When reading a couple of the other posts, I have come to the realization that other programs really rely on their assistant coaches a little more then I do. I do not believe in micro managing, but rather, keeping the workload down so that my coaches can concentrate on their families away from the game. I am the only teacher/coach in our program currently and we have been very successful over the last decade. The issue that we run into, is that our coaching staff is relatively young and they have young families, with young children. Therefore, if I can do more work on the planning side of things, I keep my coaches around and happy. Here is how a typical week looks in our program:

Sunday:

On Sunday morning our film will have been uploaded to our Hudl program by our student assistant and shared to our upcoming opponent. We will also obtain all the film from our opponent that we are playing in the upcoming week. This is done by our defensive coordinator and myself(head coach and offensive coordinator). Our entire coaching staff is obligated to watch our opponents and review their practice film to gather information about game strategy that can be used in our game plan. Our DC will game plan for the defensive side of the game, while I will prepare our offensive game plan and special teams game plan. Each positional coach is in charge of breaking down their units performance and making cut ups that we will go over on Monday with our team.

Monday:

7 a.m. - Grade 11/12 lifting session

9 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. - Grade 9/10 lifting sessions are organized throughout the day with our strength and conditioning coach

Noon - Coaches meeting via Google Drive to complete Tuesdays practice session. Must be filled out and completed by 1 p.m. the day before. We meet everyday as a coaching staff to discuss what is needed during the week in our practices.

3:20 p.m. - Yoga

4:20 p.m. - Character Education - A theme is selected each week to discuss what is necessary to be a member of the Celtic Football Program

4:45 p.m. - Special Teams meeting - Go over film and game plan for special teams

5:15 p.m. - Team Film meeting - Review the previous weeks game and discuss what the gameplan is regarding our opponent for the week. We do not watch the entire game, but we cut up the game film and present what is necessary to move forward and clean up our performance.

5:45 p.m. - Offensive and Defensive Breakout Meetings - The offensive and defensive coordinators will take their units to go over more cut ups of film that will build upon the game plan for the week.

6:15 p.m - Unit Breakout Meetings - Each unit coach has 1/2 hour to go over and discuss the weeks practice film and discuss alterations or adjustments to practice performance or skill development that are necessary for us to become better for the previous week. We also use this time to discuss any issues that may have occurred in the school amongst our student/athletes.

Tuesday/Wednesday - Regular practices

7 a.m. - Grade 11/12 lifting session

9 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. - Grade 9/10 lifting sessions are organized throughout the day with our strength and conditioning coach

Noon - Coaches meeting via Google Drive to complete Tuesdays practice session. Must be filled out and completed by 1 p.m. the day before. We meet everyday as a coaching staff to discuss what is needed during the week in our practices.

3:30 p.m. - Coaches meeting to discuss practice format and review any questions we might have as coaches

3:45 p.m. - Pre-practice - This involves our coaches going through their own unit warm up regiments like bag work and cone work. This is where the specialists will work on snapping, kicking/punting and where the QBs will complete their own warmups. We have a parent that will use our horn and follow our practice plan to ensure that we are kept on task and following the intention of the plan.

4:00 p.m. - Team pursuit drill/Hitting progressions(Safe Contact progressions)

4:15 p.m. - Warm-up

4:30 p.m. - Team Tackling/Special Teams - We work on a team tackling drill, while our special teams coordinator has 15 minutes to work on specials.

4:45 p.m. - Insertion - Offensive and Defensive insertion of what plays, formations, or adjustments we will make in our playbooks for the game plan this week.

5:00 p.m. - Indy - 15 minutes in total - 3 seperate 5 minute blocks where our coaches will run through their own unit drills for skill development. First indy period is used to concentrate on run skill development.

5:15 p.m .- Inside Period - 12 vs. 12 full contact green period concentrating on the run

5:20 p.m. - Indy - 15 minutes in total - 3 seperate 5 minute blocks where our coaches will run through their own unit drills for skill development. Second indy period is used to concentrate on pass skill development.

5:35 p.m. - Skelly - This is a frame period where we are working our pass game and pass defence. Linemen use this period for a third Indy session or for one on ones.

5:50 p.m. - Special Teams - We go back to special teams to concentrate on another element of specials(KO, KR, Punt, Field Goal, Extra Point), or we work in a concentrated special teams drill into this section of practice. A lot of time we blend our special teams drills into our conditioning period.

6:05 p.m .- Team Period - 12 vs. 12 full contact green period - This is where we put it all together.

6:25 p.m .- Team Address

Thursday:

7 a.m. - Grade 11/12 lifting session

9 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. - Grade 9/10 lifting sessions are organized throughout the day with our strength and conditioning coach

Noon - Coaches meeting via Google Drive to complete Tuesdays practice session. Must be filled out and completed by 1 p.m. the day before. We meet everyday as a coaching staff to discuss what is needed during the week in our practices.

3:30 p.m. - Coaches meeting to discuss practice format and review any questions we might have as coaches

On Thursdays, we will have a shortened practice schedule, but will concentrate on making sure that it is a perfect practice as much as possible. Many times we will come out in just helmets and shoulder pads, keeping everyone up from hitting the ground. Our tempo is red, which to us, means fitting or running through/past our opponents as defenders. Our offensive players concentrate on finishing every play to the endzone. We focus a lot of making sure that our special teams are crisp and everyone understands our gameday protocols. We will go through many hurry up offensive periods or what we like to call lightning periods(2 minute drill) where we are giving our players game situations to work through.

5:30 p.m. - Team Meal - we gather in our school where our parents have an amazing team meal for all of our players. We pray, and break bread, going over what is expected of all of us for game day.

Friday - Gameday:

7 a.m. - Grade 11/12 mobility/flexibility session

9 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. - Grade 9/10 mobility and flexibility are organized throughout the day with our strength and conditioning coach

3:30 p.m. - Coaches meeting to discuss gameday format and review any questions we might have as coaches. We usually go out for an early supper to discuss these things and share pregame comraderie.

4:30 p.m. - Mobility/Flexibility programming for our players

5:00 p.m. - Mental training - Go over the game with our strength and conditioning coach

5:30 p.m. - Taping with our athletic trainer, injury reports

6:00 p.m. - Special teams specialists are on the field working through punt, field goals, snapping, returning

6:20 p.m. - Team comes out to the field and starts pre-game preparations

7 p.m . - Game Time

Saturday:

I will take a look at the film on this day, and we use it as a day off of football for the rest of our players and coaches. I will make my notes and adjustments to be used as a discussion with my coaches for Sunday.

On this script there is a lot of reminders and information for coaches, managers and trainers. In our program we give a theme to the day of the week to add some excitement or motivation for the athlete’s .Most Important Mondays is a mental day we move around a little, helmets and shorts, big install day. Turn Up Tuesday is the theme for today’s script .The team is in full gear and the first two reminders to the staff is” CULTURE OVER SCHEME - SPEAK THE LANGUAGE AND FIGHT FOR THE CULTURE IF YOU'RE NOT COACHING YOU'RE WRONG”.

We get the team out of the locker room and get them to pre-practice which is a ten min block right before practice that we use to eliminate standing around and it presses the athlete to be on time. We can also get little extra work like a correction on a technique, coverage ,play, route ,or even extra install time those choices are left up to the coordinators.

From pre-practice we go into the Flex period of practice where we stretch and flex .We do a dynamic stretch with the whole team we line up in waves 3 lines of 20 across that move on a whistle a line at a time .This drill might be one of the most important drill of the whole practice .We all move on one sound the same way every time everybody looks the same and if not we start it all over, the coaches are into it setting the tone for the energy of practice.

After flex we jump right into it with some type of competition Board Drills, Rabbit Drill, etc...All of these drills are done by all positions to get everyone involved. Each coach is expect to coach his kids through this drill with high energy .Each coach is also responsible for coming up with a competition drill for this period , this is to give your assistants some type of ownership in what’s going on.

After competition we jump into special teams, those coaches and or players that are not involved in special teams would go with the coordinators to move at their discretional other will assist on special teams. We split our spec. team days into kicking days and receiving days. We have a segment of 15 minutes 3 periods to get it done so we don’t do a lot of covering full kick punt or kickoffs down field. During Punt up front we do drills for footwork ,hat/hand placement ,release points, while that is being coached up front the coach that are coaching the gunners are working releases the long snapper is working with the punter working on timing all being coached with high energy. After punt we go into P.A.T /field goals, during this period we work on snap and hold steps and hands by the front we also rep all fire call and any fakes installed. From P.A.T we move to kick off during this time we work on assignment, alignment responsibilities and technique. Our 6 inside guys will be drilling avoiding , stacking, and squeezing our 4 outside guys are being drilled to make inflight adjustment to the ball and leveraging ,while the kicker is getting some down the field to a returner.

From special teams we go into install these periods are for the coordinators both offensive and defensive to put the upcoming game plan on the grass as it was discussed in the classroom All movement by anyone assistant coach and or player at this is up to the instruction and discretion of the coordinator The coordinators and or coaches should be explain the plan and why, any adjustment if necessary reads, keys, and alerts any information obtained to this point that could help be better.

The next period starts INDY, this where each coach will take his group through EDD’s

Every Day Drills these drills are crafted to get the best out our players for what we want to do so we don’t waste time doing unnecessary drills Each coach is with hi group coaching with high energy improving on the necessary techniques to be successful.

We put those EDD’s to play in this next periods we go into group work .In these periods we do live drill work with each position going through position specific live drill . The WR working mesh and spacing and the DB’S working 3 over 2 then coming together for 1 on 1. RB’s and LBer’s working on fits ,and backs on backers ,and the OL/ DL working run fits as a group and then moving to some 1 on 1’s During these coaches should still have that same energy coaching up the athletes this not a long period so rep should be rapid fire coaches coach up the film. From there we go to “HALFTIME” which is 5 minute hydration break during that time coaches hold up with the HC to check the pulse of the day, reminders and make any adjustments that’s needed. After the break we get into the inside run period .During this time we practice our inside run game on offense and our run defense from the install Coaches during this period should be coaching with high energy quick in between the whistle to maximize reps. The whole program is in “RUN “mode for the next 20 minutes. While the front 7 guy work the wide outs and DB should be working drills like stalk blocks, hit and shed drills, drills that will enhance or run defense from that position. From there we switch and go “Pass” mode the for the next 20 minutes by going skelly working on the Offensive passing game and the defensive pass coverage. While the skill and big skill guys are working on their craft the OL/DL should be working on pass pro and pass rush. After skelly the defensive 2 way players stay with the offense for work and the defense goes to polish for corrections, during this time defensive coaches should take this time to breakdown and correct all mistakes so far in practice .Mean while on the offense Coaches during this period should be coaching with high energy quick in between the whistle to maximize reps. As they run a combonatiation of the installed plays both run and pass against an opposing defense. At the end of that period the offense and defense switches roles. the offensive 2 way players stay with the defense for work and the offense goes to polish for corrections, during this time offensive coaches should take this time to breakdown and correct all mistakes so far in practice .Mean while on the offense Coaches during this period should be coaching with high energy quick in between the whistle to maximize reps. As they run a combination of the installed defenses against the run and pass against an opposing offense. We then go into our fourth quarter program which is our conditioning period .Right after conditioning we get into a compotation period .We believe that competing after conditioning builds stamina and toughness in our players .Today we as a staff chose goal line as the situation best on best play continues until the clock run out touchdown or not, coaches off the field at this time. When the period ends players bring it up and take a knee and listen to coaches remarks about practice, and reminders of the goals of the program

Game planning procedures always start inside the film room with the coaches first and then after we get on board and on the same page; we then invite the entire team to break down the film and inform every player as to what we are dealing with that coming week and weekend. After devising a well strategically created plan we get to work on and off the field. A strength and conditioning coach will be responsible for developing, planning, and leading the weight training and conditioning program. Conditioning can and will be performed before, after, and during scheduled practice times. Any sort of nagging injuries will be addressed before and after practices. Each player will be evaluated regularly for mental, physical, and social health. My player's health and education always come first. As each player is cleared daily to participate after they check in with the team's appointed health specialists or trainer and teachers, then they can move on to participating in practice after the health and education aspects are cleared and addressed.

Athletes are only as good as they can be as long as they are taking care of the important things first. I consider mental and emotional health very seriously and want to be informed if any of my players need help in those areas. If they can not get out of survival mode then they aren't going to have the ability to reach their full potential to achieve successful transformative outcomes. If any individual does not feel safe in the environments they are made to reside in then that has to be addressed first. We will not be doing any justice to our players if we aren't taking the time to make sure they feel safe to learn and grow inside the surroundings provided for them, I make sure the relationships are kept cooperative so nothing is over or under-evaluated.

The way I like to plan and organize our week schedule first addresses the team's wellness and needs to succeed, then the offense, defense, and last but never least special teams, and then the Coach's needs met last. Plans to succeed that week will be directly related to film and what we know about our opponents. Once we know what these tendencies are we can then start devising what formations and plays we will run in order to set our team up to succeed most efficiently. The film sessions are used to expose the opposing team's weaknesses and devise plans to take away their strengths. For example, if they have a star HB we will assign a run defense putting 5 down linemen and stacking the box against that player to make sure they are contained. If the QB can throw the deep ball well then we will make sure we play a contain cover 4 in the secondary always applying pressure to make the QB rattled under pressure. There are many aspects of the opponent's game we can learn from by studying film.

After devising a plan and developing a POA for the offense we then move on to doing the same for the Defense and then Special Teams. We also do not want to hinder our strengths as a team by trying to react to our opponents. We want to play our game and run what works best for us that way we are setting and controlling the pace of the game and putting ourselves in the best position to succeed. If we focus too much on the other team we can forget about the basics that got us to that point. I stress practicing and perfecting the basics in order to prevent flags flying for things like false starts, illegal moves, fumbles, dropped passes, interceptions, and turnover on downs which could be the very things that determine a team from winning or losing in close competitive games.

I really like the options game in football because it allows your athletes to fully understand situational football. Coaching the option game allows for players to make the plays start to finish and understand a system fully opposed to always looking outside themselves to make decisions. I feel this is true in real life. We don't always have someone looking over us helping to guide and make the right choices. So, not only does the options game pertain to football but its frame of mentality also spills over nicely into one's everyday life in decision making and develops healthy coping skills for each athlete to operate their lives in and with.
