How long does everyone practice. How do you balance not making practice too long with making sure everything is covered and your team is prepared. I feel our practices are too long, but we ARE prepared on friday nights. The last two seasons we have played really well the first half of the season, but tailed off by the end, and I believe all the hours spent on the practice field contributed to the falloff. Any comments, ideas?
In the summer, during 2-a-days we go three hours per practice.
During the 1st 3 weeks of the season, we go 2:15 minutes max.
Weeks 4,5,6,7 we go 1:45-1:50
Weeks 8,9,10 we go 1:30 minutes.
We can accomplish this because we do the same boring thing week after week. We don't need as many reps to stay sharp. It helps late in the season so we can stay fresh as well.
2 HOURS MAX. After that the concentration and fatigue factors combine for a downhill spiral. Killing kids during two-a days is old hat. I would much rather have a good solid 2 hour practice, some class room, and call it a day PROVIDED YOUR KIDS HAVE WORKED ALL SUMMER AND ARE IN GOOD PHYSICAL SHAPE. WHEN DON SHULA HAD THE DOLPHINS, THEY WERE 75% CLASS ROOM, 25% ON FIELD PRACTICE. Of course, they work mainly on game planning, etc. not having to teach technique at that level. Just my way. I will extend practice if they are really working hard and still have full concentration, but that usually declines drastically at the 2 hour limit.
