STAY AWAY FROM ALL THAT JUNK!!! I ALMOST LOST TWO PLAYERS IN 1986 BECAUSE THEY BOTH "O-DEED" ON SOMETHING VERY SIMILAR AND GOT THEIR HEART RATES OVER 250!!! AT THE HALF TIME BREAK THEY WERE BOTH RUSHED OFF THE FIELD IN NEED OF SERIOUS MEDICAL ATTENTION!

I think every year coaches run the gambit of any "supplementation" whether it's a drink or pill....a stimulant will always give the perception of an immediate "boost" and / or edge. Kids will be kids, and in America, we will Always be "over-doing it". One of the biggest problems we face in the summer is DEHYDRATION....outside of the cardiac dangers with a kid "self-medicating", but the cramping and loss of body fluids caused by the metabolic increase - it's hard enough trying to keep the kids hyrdrated as it is, let alone ANOTHER obstacle to this issue.
One thing, I like to do is give the kids as much an edge as possible. Part of that is teaching "combat breathing" / "rhythm breathing" where they can dictate physiological responses in their body to get a desired outcome. When we first started with our program, I was amazed how many kids couldn't BREATHE properly - either exhausting themselves, hyperventalating, blowing their wad too soon.
We have quick "chalk talks" during Indy (much of which I'm sure they tune out :-) ) about how the body will naturally 'fall' into place given a particular scenario....(physiological responses to finding your girlfriend cheating and / or being totally relaxed at the beach), and how the kids can (self) INDUCED phsiological states to get what they want out of themselves (stimulation). Much of this training starts in the off-season in the WEIGHT ROOM. Teaching kids how to gear up for lifts...filling up / releasing the diaphram for stabilization in concentric / eccentric phases of the movement.
I think the biggest "edge" the HS athlete wants, craves, and desires.... above all else is CONFIDENCE. Maybe I'm wrong, but the one thing kids strive for daily is the acceptance of their peers and to know that they are fulfilling their role (have a nitche). As a coach, I can do this by breaking their duties down, show how and why they would WANT to do such-and-such....sell them on why this is the best situation and why they will be "superman" for doing so...
When you have confidence, you then can open the door to / unlock AGGRESSIVENESS....which is what I want out of them.
