This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches, was wondering if anyone runs a 4-3 with cover 3 as their base coverage. I like cover 2 but it is not great against strong inside running teams that spread the field. We may not be talented enough to play a true 4 across robber scheme, so I was wondering if cover 3 would be a good option? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Two seasons ago we had a great LB corp. and a great SS so we played a lot of cover 3. The SS was all over the place making tackles. We lined him up varied based on formations, tendencies, strengths, etc. For the most part it almost becomes a 4-4. I feel if you have a good SS you can use 4-3 cover 3 very efficiently. Our switch up was cover 2 and man. Good luck.
we have always played cover 3 with 43 fronts. we will usually play cover 3, 0, or 1 ( man free ). he is usually one of our better athletes that likes to hit. but you need a good f/s to help to the weakside alley. he either needs to be a speed demon or if he lacks speed, then he needs to be smart and your best openfield tackler in the secondary.

Anytime an experienced OC sees cover three vs. spread your going to get a minimum of 4 verticals. I run a 3 x 2 and they will see 5 verticals from us .

that's fine with me...since i have the chalk now, we know that that is a perceived weakness, so we drill it everyday. first, i am going to find the weakest OL you have and put my best athlete there. i am going to make you throw it quicker than you want. once you realize that i have you outmanned at that position, then you will help that ol out with either a back or an adjacent ol. then i will send a linebacker from the opposide to give me a five man rush and give up an underneath zone and make you qb find it. as far as the secondary goes..we have the cb run the midpoint of their deep 1/3 that way they can play inbetween the two verticals on their side. he reacts to the flight path of the ball, inside he is inside, outside receiver, then he speed turns and squeezes the wr into the sideline. f/s sees that he has two inside receiving threats then he deepens his alignment and aligns inbetween the two inside receivers. he reads the qb front shoulder and off hand to which direction to go. the olb will reroute the inside receivers on thier release, delaying their route. vertical routes are thrown at least 15 yds down field probably closer to 23 yds., by the time the ball is released we are just another receiver running down field reacting to the pass. when we have been burned by verticals, is has not been for the scheme we run... but who we are defending or playing with. schemes don't scare me.... personnel does. the chalk is now yours...:beer;

Like you say it all boils down to personell, if you can outplay your opponent your going to win the vast majority of the time. Just like you look for a weak linemen, I look for weak (slowest DB you have back in whatever scheme you want to run on us) I will have 5 guys who are all sub 4.5's with a real sprinter at our #2 on the trips side and our #2 on the backside. That is because if you try to play man the trip side # 2 will be covered by your SS and the backside #2 will be covered by a LB. We should win those two matchups all night. The trips side # 3 will have a LB on him also. If I can't get 5 verticals down the field against that, then I need new receivers, agreed? No, I'm not going to run the crossing routes and hope for the picks and the rubs every time verses man, some yes, but more than likely we are going to stretch you vertically after the snap and horizontally in pre snap. We are going to put your man on an island with very little help just by alignment, and then on the snap it is your best against my best. If your in man that makes 6 the max number you can bring or someone is going to be uncovered big time. AS I run an empty gun, that means that my QB has to be his own best blocker and by that I mean he has to run out of trouble, read on the run, and throw the ball without pulling up to plant and throw. At my level, I can recruit the players I need that have the particular skills that are needed to implement my system. I know you don't have that luxury coach and that is why it becomes superfluous to compare the things that we are comparing, but it is sure fun isn't it? I don't drink beer, but I will take a diet coke!

how about an IBC root beer we are kicking those back right now, with the wife due ( 2nd child ) at the end of the week. i have to be ready to "drive" at any moment.

Root beer is great! I know about those drives, my wife and I raised 3 daughters and one son. Our second daughter was born the night that Cassius Clay( at that time, later Mohammed Ali) knocked Sonny Liston out for the Heavy weight title. I had worked my fanny off that day and was dead tired, but wanted to watch the fight. Clay knocked him out pretty quick, and I hit the rack and was out like a light. Not an hour later my wife shook me awake and said: Honey, it's time! I kept everything right by the bed for just such an emergency and proceeded to jump out of bed, stuck both legs at the same time into one leg of the trousers and fell flat on my butt! We laugh about it to this day and that "little girl" is now 41 years of age. Best of luck to you with your new little one, DRIVE CAREFULLY!

what is your favorite pass protection for your empty and ace formations ( w/o te )? and what types of pressures gives you fits? this would be definite passing situations. ya, my bag is packed and in the trunk. my daugther was born during the college world series and now this one will be born during march maddness. LOL i told my wife when we got married that our children couldn't be born from august until february ( football thru duck season ).

We are always going to see the classic their 6 on my 5. I don't use the ace formation, always 3 x 2 empty gun. I have an extensive passing play book that I have built over the years and incorporate a "must run, must pass" system from. I got the system years ago and it revolves around the principle that you will put in 3-5 new running and passing plays each game that your opponent has not seen you run before that season. In order to do that over a 15 game schedule, it takes a thick play book.
Our pass pro is pretty much base slide and put a hat on five of the 6 and let the QB fend for himself as I stated in earlier post. We run and throw out of some 26 formations (52 counting both sides) and are quite versatile. We will spread you from side line to side line in the PSL and your not going to be able to load up on us without leaving uncovereds, which we will immediately take advantage of. Defenses think that the way to defeat us is bring the heat every play! We pray for that, as it makes it so much easier on us. To be perfectly honest with you coach, we really aren't given particular fits by any defense we see because we work 5 days a week getting ready for what we know they bring to the table. What gives us fits is when the other team has better players, it's that simple. I am 76-23-1 for regular season play, 2 Division championships, 7 play off wins and we won the 1994 AFL Super Bowl. We have elevated 31 young men to the next level including the NFL, the CFL, the NFL Europe League and both the Arena 1 and Af2 Leagues. I guess it sounds boastful, but we are proud of what we accomplished. I sold my team at the close of the 2003 season and "retired", went fishing, hunting and relaxed for 8 months. A friend of mine and fellow competitor was having coaching problems and asked me if I would consider taking the HC position? He made me an offer and here I am, just having completed our 18th week of off season preparation. Man, I love to deer and duck hunt! Upland birds of all kinds ( I used to raise English Pointers). I love to fish more than I like to eat when I'm hungry! Bass and trout mainly, but I enjoy a good outing for catfish when I have a taste for a fish to eat. What part of the country are you located in? I used to hunt ducks and geese in the Pacific Flyway. At that time you could get 8 big ducks,(mallards, sprig(Pintails), you name it. One of my best memories was getting 8 greenhead mallards and a canadian honker with almost a 7 ft. wing span in a single morning hunt at a public reserve in Mendota, California.

we run a double slot offense with emphasis on the belly, trap and midline. we were not very good last year but i was lucky to have two tall outstanding WR's that could run and a QB that could wing it. Many teams would play cover 2 and man under so that they could get over top with their safeties. with this said, they took our deep balls away but it took a guy out of their run support. we mauled defenses up front with our running game and we were very small. I love seeing cover 2 and then we just run the football up the middle.
now, about your earlier question.... we run primarily 4-3 with base cover 3 zone. our SS is about 4 yds off the ball and is able to run support along with our weak LB. We also run man coverage with 1 deep and 0 deep when we want to blitz. we dont blitz out of zone.
in our offene, we run vs cover 2 and pass vs cov 3.
