Jet Sweep from Spread Formation???

no problem with that at all just make sure your tackle stays on the playside DE if you ever run across a five and nine technique you make have to have your tackle cut the playside d-end make sure you have your sweeper bubble his path also

i have seen it done with great results.

Out of your motion - you have the:

1. jet (hand it off and fake the RB counter after the jet handoff)
2. jet fake - RB counter with OL pulling
3. jet fake - counter fake - QB counter with OL pulling
4. jet fake - counter fake- play action waggle
5. jet fake - counter fake - play action waggle - throwback to the JET guy
6. jet fake - counter fake - play action - screen to the play fake

You defense has to be disciplined. I luckily was in the stands watching this and not defending it.

If I am running this Jet sweep from under the Center...let me ask you this??? Instead of having the slot bubble his path so he doesn't run into any garbage with the playside DE, can I just deepen him up to begin with. For example, instead of having him one yard off the line of scrimmage, can I cheat him back to 2 yds. I am thinking of doing this, so he doesn't have to bubble and he can immediately get down hill and square his shoulders a little quicker. What are your thoughts on this?

Our fullback (Superback - in our offense) will alway come through the playside A-gap after the Jet, no matter who get the ball. QB has to belly around to give (or fake) the jet, and than continue working back on the midline to give (or fake) to the Superback who is running at the playside A-gap, the QB will continue to stay on his path, get depth and setup for playaction. What are your thoughts? How deep do you think I should have my Superback?

Why do you call him the SUPERBACK? I only ask because I call him that, too. Have you coached with Red Faught from Franklin & Georgetown Colleges - he also referred to the FB as superback!

How are you guys blocking the OLB versus a 4-4. I am thinking of cracking with the SE and having the fontside slot crack on the ILB with the S back arcing to the CB. I can just see the OLB widening to get to the runner and wham. Does anybody run it this way? We will have a gifted runner at slot this year and I would like to take advantage of him. I really like the QB Dart and zone play back the other way.

We ran the Jet sweep series last year from the Wing-T Red/Blue formation (two wings, one back), pulling the guard. We would dive the FB ("superback") to the backside A gap (trap block) or the frontside A gap (iso with the PS Wing). Similar to midline option, the QB meshes for both handoffs are on the LOS, this helps to hide the ball from the defense, as the QB has his back to the defense before booting away from the Jet action, so the defense must account for three possibilities.

Our best success running the Jet sweep occurred when we ran it to the weak side to a split end because it's where the least amount of defenders were. Running it to a slot or trips only put more defenders at the point of attack, and although we thought we were getting extra blockers, the extra traffic kills the play. As far as zone blocking the play, the play just works the best when the RB simply runs a parabolic path to the sideline. Any time they try to cut back, they run into the pursuit, and what was a six yard gain becomes a two yard gain. The playside guard pulls to get a scraping backer or alley filling safety while the PST and PS wing will reach block (sort of a zone concept) the force. As I understand the zone play, you are looking for cutback lanes. Do not do this with the Jet or you will not realize the potential of the play. Get one of your fastest guys with the ball, and a running head start, and outflank the D on the perimeter with speed, not blocking. If they start to move more people there to take away the sweep, the two FB dives open up.

When we use the Jet motion, the back passes a good three feet behind the level of the QB's butt is when he gets the snap (which is when the back is at the BSG). The QB spins 180 degrees and hands off the ball in the play side A gap and then fakes to the FB in the back side A gap. The Jet sweep back shouldn't run into the guard unless they're getting a huge push on the playside, which probably means the D is overplaying to the motion and you need to run the complementary FB trap play.

It really took three or four practices for the timing, footwork, and body position of the backfield players to be worked out on a consistent basis. I know there are some coaches that teach a slight bubble by the running back to allow for the guard to pull, but in my experience, the running back blows by the guard long before he can get in his way anyway. Remember, we are pulling the guard to stop a penetrating or scraping linebacker, not pulling the guard to lead the play.
