Coach Jess I have found the 55 gallon plastic industrial drums to be great teaching aids because of the way they will slide on grass and how the offensive line can rotate and push their combos. Against the barrles if done correctly they will take off and slide so its immediate feedback to a player that he has fitted to the barrel correctly if not the barrel tends to fall over which means they have gotten to high center on the barrel. Coach Campbell,
I'm new to the forum and coaching as well. I have only 1 year experience coaching the Offensive line for my Youth League. I coach 13-14 year olds and next year I plan to become a HC for a 12 year old team. My question is this, do you feel the barrel drills will be effective for 12 year olds or is this primarily a drill for High School athletes?

Coach I think the barrels for your kids would be great and once you get the barrels I will be glad to help. Coach you can never start to soon all you will be doing for your kids is giving them the edge and thats OK. Glad to have you to our site and I'll look forward to being of help. Get the barrels... We have 5 plastic barrels - we got them from our maintainance department at school - I think some type of cleaning solution was in them, any way check with your schools maintainance people and I imagine you cill find they have more than they know what to do with.

Great idea with the barrels, Coach Campbell. We already use barrels to set up lots of defensive drills, but none with the o line. We are going to implement this as soon as possible. Do you weight the barrell down with anything or is it completely empty? And, what is the hand placement or aiming point as they work the barrells?

Coach indeed the barrells are great teaching tools. For the offensive line you want to leave the barrells empty because you want the barrells to slide. Hand placement is to the top and to the side of the barrell. Good to hear from you. Coach CAmpbell

The barrells are left empty because you want them to slide this helps your offensive line move their feet because they must stay up ith the barrell. Barrells can be used vs one linemen or two wrking combos. Coach CAmpbell
Coach Campbell, We have a pretty bumpy practice field, not very level in spots. how well do the barrells slide on that? What are other alternative places to do the drill?
