Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I would also love to hear if any coaches concentrate on hand strength. Hand placement is so crucial for OL and DL. If you can get a lock on your opponent's breast plate of his shoulder pads, he is through. What is an effective way to build this strength.
1. I have my kids hang from the pull-up bar and this is usually an 'end of the workout' thing we do. It is also a strong man event.
2. I also have my kids hold onto very heavy dumbells (80-100 lbers) for as long as they can and they cant rest them on their hips.
When i do 1 & 2 above, the other kids are usually doing push-ups or sit-ups until the kid doing the exercise above fails. then another kid gets up does the lift while the kids do push-ups again, etc. Once again, this is at the end of a work out and we do this together.
Try working with sand bags - the weight will shift a little - just a DL will.
The 'Farmer's Walk' (another strongman event) would work with these - and you could have them do the Crucifix Hold... or practice the punches with the bags. Gilman Corp makes a 'punch bag' just for this purpose.
Personally... I know in my playing days my hand strength came from carrying pails of cement up ladders during summer jobs, or stocking the bags when they came into the store room.
Check out Elite FTS. They have devices called the Captains of Crush. I don't have them, but would be interested from hearing from anyone who does.
Wrist curls, wrist rollers, farmer's walks, and using oversized (fat bars) barbells are all good ways to increase grip strength.
Some coaches also suggest that lifters shouldn't use wrist straps when pulling or rowing because it limits the development of grip strength. Personally, I disagree with this. I don't want the amount of weight that my kids can move to be limited by a lack of grip strength.
We do all of the above with plates....usually 45lbs...farmer walks....punches etc. We have a very limited budget and do not want to spend any money on bags etc. so we use what we have.
do you directly teach your kids to hold. I cant say I use the word HOLD when I teach it, but I do ask that they work their hands to the inside, shoot them upwards, aiming for the nipples........ if their thumbs are on the buckle of the shoulder pad, and their fingers can embrace the shell of the breast plate, they can get an advantage over the DL. Control is huge - especially when you cannot get the movement you need. If a guy cannot get off a block, he cannot make a tackle.
Since I am very fortunate to still be able to play the game and coach....... I definitley teach my o-line the proper way to HOLD. Its not illegal as long as you are doing it the right way. I tell my players that they are being taught to hold, and that if they are put into a postion to where they need to let go...let go...if not they will be called for holding. I am getting to where I know I have to hang up the pads soon, but the one thing that keeps me on the field playing with the younger and quicker guys is my ability to properly hold.
Coach, you must have me confused with someone else, or taken one of my posts out of context. I never said anything about being against teaching a method of holding that all of us do and that is to punch, grab cloth with thumbs up (holding) hold breastplate to steer the DLM, etc. As both you and Coach Campbell point out, it is legal if executed properly. Sorry if it did not come out the way it was intended, or it was misinterpreted, as that is a fallicy of the written word.

I tell my kids to grab the breast plate like a steering wheel and drive the car down the field. Besides its only illegal if you get caught. And no way a ref is gonna call that more than 2 or 3 times a game.
