We are finally going to get a weight lifting class that kids can take instead of PE. The class will meet every day for 47 minutes, including time to change out and shower. By the time we warm up, I think this will leave about 25 minutes (at least). Does anyone have a similar situation and a syllabus they would share. Also, how would you prescribe the lifts for athletes if they are lifting 5 times a week like this? Thanks.
I would not lift 5 days a week. I would have them lift 3x a week with some flexibility for in-season athletes. The other 2 days I would have them do plyos and speed training.

I agree 3 days would be best. We could definitely do that in the fall and spring... but not in the winter as the gym will be full from the other PE class. Is there ANY way during that time we could work it out or is it just too much?
CUI, That is great, but not much time to get work done. I have seen some schools do a ZERO Hour, where the kids arrive EARLY and get the lifts in before the school day. Do you have control over WHEN the classes will be during the day? How many students will be in one class? How many platforms, racks etc. do you have?
I'm not a coach, nor have I ever been involved with a weightlifting class, but here is an idea I came up with.
Instead of lifting all five days or doing a 3 day split with running on the other days (since you said the gym was too crowded) you could lift 3 or 4 days a week (which ever you choose) and do lifting instruction on the non-lifting days. By that I mean explain the theories and science behind what you are doing, and possibly other methods of weight lifting.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. All were good. I think we will have the early bird weight lifting so that will certainly work there, but I still need to work something out for the lifting during the school day. I am kind of leaning toward some kind of 4 day split during the cold months, where the athletes will be limited to one intensive leg day. The "off" day will be geared toward a demonstration of lifts, flexibility, or possibly an article review. What do you guys think about this, especially the 4 day split? It's been so long since I've done this, I'm not sure how I would organize it any more.
You can do speed training in your weight room.Cracks in the floor/rubberized floor, benches, dot drills etc. When we get foul weather and can't get outside or use the gym,we go in the weight room and jump/run over cracks in the floor(quick feet).we will jump over benches also.If you have room in your weight room to add some hurdles(SIX together) this definitely helps.Paint some dots on your mats for various jumping and running routines. If this doesn't or can't work, workout 5 days a week with upper body 3 days, lower body 2 days then switch it up the next week.Stomach and lower back everyday.
