Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
A full step off the mid line is simply a long step far enough off the mid line as to be able to hand the ball off to a back running ON the mid line EXAMPLE: running the trap over the Center's butt (FB is ON the mid line, QB is about 1 yd off the midline running parallel to mid-line).
A 1/2 step is a shorter step in the same direction (I assume he took 1 long & 1 short step). Study Tubby Raymonds book on the DELAWARE WING-T - they are all about who is on the mid line on what play.
The key word is "OFF" the midline. Bill having just explained what the midline is, off could not possibly be at 3 or 6 as that would be right smack down the middle of the midline. My understanding has always been the same as yours, Bill, the full or half step making the back able to stay on the midline while QB is off the correct distance depending upon what the play is.

Coming back 1 step off the midline PROBABLY implies 5 or 7 o'clock (because mid line = 6).
Almost EVERY step the QB takes in this offense (there ARE exceptions) are 5 & 7 for Inside Zones, Counter/Powers, Isos, etc., or 4 & 8 for outside zone. He is at 6 on DBP & Draw. That's about all they teach. You can see the path on the DIAGRAMS in that Steeler book & surmise which it is!

Coach,
That is how I teach the QB as a 5 o'clock or 7 o'clock step right or left. I use the clock and tell them to step back at those times/step, and the FB has 6 o'clock(midline).

On the Midline footwork for the QB we teach push away (to get out of the way) parellal to the LOS, this negates penetration by the defense then we have the QB step at 6 O'clock reaching the ball back as deep as he can for the ride. first step by the fullback should be with the foot closest to the QB.
