Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
What are the standard plays run to the TE vs a 5-3 where the nose is shaded to TE the Tackle is either in a 4 tech or slanting inside and the DE is squeezing a downblock. This is a hard defense to run against. Anyone feel they can scheme this? We see this 4-5 times a year, all replies are welcome. Thanks in advance, History 10.
Try running the FB to the strongside A gap and bending him to the backside A gap( like a trap path). The MLB should flow to the strongside before reacting weakside. You can pick him up with and center-PS guard combo. If they are playing a 4i weak, you can fold the weak tackle to the weak stacked LB and turn out the 4i with the weak guard.
Also, split the heck out of them to create bigger seams inside.
You will have a heck of a time running strong against this. We run this quite a bit vs the wing-t except we have a 5 tech strong and a 4i weak.
I like Iso vs a 5-3 if they are playing the DT in a 5 tech. If you OT can handle him then you can combo the guard and center to the MLB and Iso the OLB to the strongside. Then put him in conflict with the play action pass.

I like wham action in a verses 5-3 situation: 24 wham= FB straight through to Mike, double team at the point of attack and combo to SAM, pull BSG to lead up into hole behind combo and have TE turn out on the DE. Devastating play when I ran the option as a complimentary!
But, if I see 8 in the box we are going to run as little as possible and throw the daylights out of it. If you don't have a good passing game, it may a long night as in my estimation the 5-3 is the best run stopper ever invented!

We go into a 1 back set and put the slot to the TE side and the read the lber. If he goes out on the h then we run the ball. If he splits the difference then we throw bubble screen. We see teams that won't bumb the other 2 lbers over when the strong side lber bumps out so it is almost like stealing.

Those 5-3 guys are tough to run against I'll say that. That is why you have to either do like Coachjd and bubble them to death, or run option...or better yet do both!

A lot of people say it's not a great idea to run against a 5-3, especially if you can't handle their nose guard or strongside tackle. I tend to agree, they will smother you over there. Is there anything feasible to the split end side? What do you guys think? Thanks a lot, History 10.
I'm not too sure how much snow groundchuck got over the weekend, (I heard it was close to a foot or so) but I live about 70 miles north of chuck and we didn't get a snow flake. In fact the sun was shining and it was a balmy 40 degrees!! (I hate snow)

Your right, those nights are fun, sure enough! Man, your in the wrong state to hate snow, aren't you? Do you like to hunt and fish, or no? Chuck likes to hike but is not much on the other two.

I love to hunt and fish, but finding the time can be very hard. I have a 6 yr old yellow lab that can flush a pheasent with the best of them. When we lived out western north dakota the duck and goose hunting was amazing. We have some small geese here and the ducks are few and far between, so when I do go out it is usually pheasent hunting.
How about you tigerone? You like to wet the line?

I would rather hunt and fish than eat when I'm hungry! I love to hunt pheasant!!! Every moment I can get away, I fish year 'round. I live about 500 yds. from a great bass and striper lake here in South Carolina, but have been spoiled by Florida Bass fishing for 40 years. Georgia is great too, with mountain trout fishing available in north Georgia. Used to raise English Pointers and hunt every kind of bird (quail, pheasant, grouse, partridge, dove, etc.) that I could get to. Had dark golden retreiver for ducks and geese. I posted the other day that hunting and fishing is the only thing that comes close to coaching football, IMO.

My real hunting passion (I love to hunt birds now, too) is the white tail buck! I'm about to turn 64 on May 24th, and I have been hunting them since I was 9 (wow! 55 years now I have pursued them)! What a tremendous sport, imo.

Chuck, Just invite me up sometime and I'll be glad to take you after you have had your hunter safety course, learn how to handle a firearm, understand fully that once the triggger is pulled, you can't recall the bullet! On a typical high calber hunting rifle of today, the bullet has the ability to travel 5 miles if it doesn't hit anything sooner along it's path. I've have enough guns and fishing equipment that you won't have to bring anything, just be safe.
I just heard about the tragedy at one of the schools in your state! What a crying shame! When are people going to wake up and smell the coffee? Todays lifestyle is just not cutting it! WE need major reforms enacted that will put us back on the straight and narrow! Old fashioned point of view? I'm sure it is, without doubt. But, unlike most young folks of today I can say that I have lived and functioned in society in those times, and in todays. Unequivocally, IMO, without a doubt the older ways of rasing children were far superior to todays methods! "Time outs" wouldn't have cut it back then, a good "wearing out" administered with love and correction in mind, always did the trick. God set the standards for us to live by, not the local dope pusher. The saying: It takes a whole village to raise a child has a lot of merit, imo. Adults didn't hesitate to step up and admonish a youngster they had never seen before if he was getting out of line in a public setting! Now days, these kids call the social service office and tell them their being abused if a parent so much as verbally scolds them! What a trerrible, terrible, joke on us!!! The great roman empire fell in ruins because of internal moral decay, we are not far behind!!!

1. FB trap in the A-gap is nice, especially if you can run you HB on some kind of misdirection path in the opposite direction.
2. Anything to the outside is pretty much standard: outside zone, toss, quick pitch, or the Lombardi Sweep
3. Counter Trey or any off-tackle power play where you can get the TE and the playside OT combo from DT to playside LB (G scheme, power, etc)
Also, throw a lot of 3 step stuff to your WR's: Slant, hitch, out, etc. This will force them to widen the box. You can also try running some wide slot or twins formations away from a singel TE with 2 RB's and see if they adjust down to a 5-2.
On the trap how do you get the linebackers blocked when the DT's are in 4i's? Trap is our base play and inside shades always give us trouble because its hard for the tackles to get up on the linebackers.
Have followed this thread since it's inception, gave my pick just like everyone else. But, really would like to ask you a question: Why knock yourselves out trying out how to run with 8 in the box, when all you really have to do is MAKE THEM TAKE WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO HAVE BY FORMATION. Spread them out with a formation that will not allow them to stay in there, and throw the ball or run some kind of speed option game on them, or anything that makes them unable to compress the defense against you and keep 8 in the box. Surely, every team you play is not going to run a 5-3 on you, so my suggestion would be become more versatile on offense and on those weeks you see the 5-3 looming on game night, implement a game plan that makes you the dictator and not them. Just a suggestion, as always. That's what really caused the demise of the Power "I", imo. They would just load the box and come with their ears laid back! Now, if you have the bulls to run over everybody, thats a horse of a different color.

That's a very good point coach. Most 5-3 teams will remove a LB to adjust to a simple twins formation, so you can formation them somewhat. I also think every team has base plays that they need to be able to have success with no matter what defense you see. By the way, can you help me get those LBers when the DT's are in 4i's?
I fully agree! I was stubborn a few years ago and learned that lesson. We were mounting a comeback in the second half and we were absolutely owning our opponent on the ground. We were down by 5 and our opponent switched from a shaded 50 monster to a 5-3 stack in the 4th quarter. By the time I got it through my thick head that we weren't pounding the ball like we had been, it was too late. However, I think there are probably some teams that don't have the talent to pass consistently, even if the defense is giving you 8 in the box. If that's the case, I'd recommend the runs I listed.
Coach Comet,
On the trap vs. 4i DT's, here is what we'd do...
PSTE- Base block DE PST- rip with inside arm through the outside of the 4i technique and work upfield onto playside ILB PSG- vertical push combo with C from NG to middle ILB C- vertical push combo with C from NG to middle ILB BSG- vertical push on 4i technique to backside ILB BST- vertical push on 4i technique to backside ILB
It pretty much comes down to vertical push zone blocking techniques...
If you can create backside flow with your TB or HB that will hold that MLB for just a split second, you are in even better shape. We run it as kind of a FB counter off of iso action to the backside. The FB takes his first 2 steps toward the butt of the backside guard, then bends back around the guard / center combo and inside the trap block. The TB continues to the butt of the backside tackle and it looks nearly identical to the iso.
Lochness just gave you the way to do it. You have to zone it with the combos working up to the 2nd level. Guys who can play that 4 or 4i technique are worth their weight in gold against running teams! The frontside tackle in a 50 look, that knows how to really play from a straight up 4 tech(not a 4i in this instance) is priceless against a veer option team. If he slips to a a 4i he becomes an automatic read for the QB in the PSL, or a 5 tech he is read in the PSL, BUT if he plays a true 4 now he is prepared to give your QB a real fit because he can give that fuzzy read, he can stand your OT straight up in the hole and if your QB gives to the Dive Back he just sheds and steps into the B gap and creams your FB. A 4 tech against the option can make it a long nite if your QB isn't really able to figure him out real quick! Just an added thought.

We saw alot of 5-3 this year especially in our playoffs game. We just ran our crossbuck (Belly Series) to death. The MLB bit on the FB almost everytime and the TB was heading the other way with the ball. Did not always work but as far as freezing those LBs it was a great play. Our TB had 329 yards on 39 carries, but we lost 20-7...they had better all around execution and played better defense. We also fumbled on our first two drives of the game literally giving them the 14 points.
