First of all, I am a firm believer that the off-season is crucial for in-season success. In addition to the weight training, there is alot to gain from the off-season: fellowship, team building, etc.
So when you have some dad who thinks that the "gym down the road and the personal trainer" are what's best for the player, how do you convince Dad to encourage the player to stay with the team and lift?
I have seen some players in my past (when i was not the head coach), work out all winter on their own and make individual gains. However, they were NOT with their teammates. I have also seen these players eventually chosen to be captains - which suprises the hell out of me. How can a guy who thinks he is too good for the school program be elected captain? how is that leadership? This, to me, is not what is best for the program!
Don't start the kid. Set an example. If you are TRULY about commitment and team play, that's what you'll do. It sounds overly simplistic, but that's what I would do.

Our problem is school policy states we cannot make any of the kids lift period. We can strongly encourage them and many do lift at the school but the kids who don't make an effort cannot be punished in anyway. We use The Bigger Faster Stronger program and we ask the kids that they at least do their core lifts at the school. This consists of bench, power clean, squat, box squat, deadlifts. They are broken up Mon, Tue, and Weds. This should take 45 min to maybe an hour each day. and then they can go do their other lifts like curls, rows, leg curls/extentions ect. Any place they want, Golds, the Y or at home........This seems to be working the best for us. How much offseason coaching are you guys allowed to do? I coach in N.H. and the rules are very strict. We can have a camp with another school but we cannot do any football related activities before a specified start date usually Aug 14.
