Changing positions???

I have coached every position at one time in my career. First find out what the HC wants. daily drills etc. then find out specific drills to whatever system you plan to run...then start reading and attanding clinics.

Unless your in a small school environment and just have nobody else to tap for the job, just could never understand why a HC would take a staff member and make him a position coach of a position that he knows nothing about as far as coaching it goes. To me, that will seriously impair your football team at that position. Just my opinion as always, but before a coach can become a real profficient contributor to the staff as a position coach, he has to put TIME into coaching that position and I don't mean just a year or two. This game and it's ever evolving ways require a great deal of knowledge on the part of every staff member, not just one or two. To take a man who is probably a good D line coach and say to him, OK
coach, your the new RB's coach this season just doesn't make good sense to me. Please understand what I am saying here, I am not putting down, talking down to, or in any way being derogatory to Big Cats HC. I'm just saying, IMO, it is not a sound practice.

Coaching is Coaching. Any coach who puts the effort into it can learn a new position it is just a matter of putting the time in to learn the position. It sounds like you will have NO problem with this!!

I can remember when I got my first full time job at a Div II school in South Dakota I went from being the GA and working with RB's to coaching the Lbers as a fulltime job. I was very excited about the opportunity but also very nervous about the change. I played OL in college and coached the OL for 2 years prior to being the GA working with RB's so it was a change. Just spent lots of time with the DC and visiting with other coaches I new that were def. coaches. The 3 years I coached on defense has made me a better off. coach.

Keep plugging away ~ your on the right track.

It is not about changing positions on the same staff, it's about taking a new position on a new staff at another school.

what's the difference? don't you still have to learn the new stuff? someone has to teach it to you.

This might come out wrong, but I agree with everyone on there diffferent opinions.

I think the opinion of Tiger is what I tried to do when I put my staff together. I placed coaches that I hired in the positions they felt best coaching and had experience playing and/or coaching in the past. If I had a coach that coached DL/OL his entire career I placed him in that spot, I would not have him coach the QB's and DB's if he was not comfortable at this time with it and wouldn't benefit the program to do that. When I interviewed my assistants I asked them what two positions on offense and defense they felt most comfortable and knowledgable coaching. I also told them based upon the staff some coaches might have to learn a new position or coach their second most wanted position. For example: I have a coach that stated he coached RB's and QB's in the past and that was his top two choices, after putting the staff together I told him for the best of the program and staff he had to coach WR's. He had no problem with that. First year coaching WR's and now he will have knowledge with another position on offense, he is an inspiring head coach in the future. I think this will benefit him.

On the other hand I think as time goes by or if a coach is willing to learn a new position, I feel you should be able to coach every position on Off. or Def., especially if you want to be a HC or Coord. someday. If you have a lot of OL coaches and you want a guy on the staff that has always coached OL, you would have to tell him he has to coach another position. If he wants to be on the staff and expand his knowledge there should be no prblem changing positions.
