Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am impressed with your knowledge and want to know if you have ever heard of a concept called HINGE.
Hopefully I can explain it. and this is in man coverage only, not zone.
We play a 4-3 and imagine our DE over a TE playing 2 gap with contain responsibilities. We are in man coverage! The OLB on that side is in man coverage and must scrape outside to flow. I coached with an NFL former coordinator who wanted our DE's to hinge. Normally, if the DE reads a reach, he is going to fight outside and not lose contain (something we all stress to DE's from pee wee to HS). But coach wanted our DE's to hinge. HINGE means the DE reads first step of reach block, attacks outside shoulder of TE with outside hand just like a 2 gap - but then rip outside shoulder inside and come underneath for this C gap responsibity - b/c the LB would have D on his scrape.
Maybe another way to explain it would be this. Imagine 5-3 defense and the strong side G blocks down on Nose Tackle. Nose is going to fight through double team. Mike is going to read the down block and fill - so we have two guys in the A gap and noone in the backside A. That is why cross-buck is a great play! So he would hinge the NT to have backside A
Any thoughts on this one? Would you teach this at the HS level? I see its value, and have seen positive results with it. But I am no longer with that coach who did bring alot to our defense.
Coach- The term "Hinge" in my terminology indicates an offensive blocking technique. But, used in a defensive vein as your NFL coach is using it, I can fully appreciate it as well. "Hinge" being a collective term that indicates movement in one direction originally, and then turning back or "hinging" in another direction. Yes, it is quite commonly taught on the HS level by the better teams. Hope this helps, and thanks for your kind words.
