Coaches,
I would like to compile a list of DL drillls on this topic. I will list some of the drills I am familiar with and then any drills that anyone can add will be great.
CONTACT DRILLS -1 on 1 pass rush -mirror drill -keys -1 on 1 vs a run block (get off block and make the tackle) What do you guys tend to call this drill? -split double team
NON CONTACT DRILLS -bag drills -shutes
My personal favorite=Sandbox Drill: 3 DL, and a LB vs 3 OL and a ball carrier...offense has 4 plays to go 10 yards This is a very competitive drill that can really raise the intensity during a practice.
Perhaps the most effective D-Line drill I do I call block reactions. Everyone partners up. The player facing me is an offensive line man the D-line has their back to me. I signal one of 4 blocks to the offense. I limit it to 4 for simplicity sake to the four below. I also signal a count but the OL can go after the count. DL goes on first movement (I like this becuase I want the DL to focus on their target, which is on the man, and not a ball). The DL needs to react to the block accordingly, and I ask the OL if their partner did it right. This allows me to get a lot of reps for everyone and sinse all of our guys play both ways the OL are getting work on blocking.
Coach Golla has a tape on this type of thing that I picked up this off-season, which is a little more complete, but these are the blocks I use and the reactions I'm looking for. -pass - slap rip and get upfield -down - squeeze it and prepare to take on a puller -pull - get in the hip pocket of the puller and chase, sometimes you can even grab him and get some help -base (which can be leverage either way) - push, pull, & rip across the face
We do this one almost everyday and seems to have helped
