Coaches,

Last night out of the blue one of our school board members (female who's kids did not participate in anything) proposed that we eliminate one varsity football coach position. The rest of the board and supt. did not like the idea but are giving us one month to provide information on why we should keep the coaching position. History of our board is if we can provide stats on liability issues, coach to player ratio, etc... we will be fine. Here is some brief info on how our staff is set up by the school.

Head Coach
Asst Head Coach (Def Coord)
Asst Coach (Off. Coord)
Asst Coach 10th Grade Def Coord
Asst Coach 10th Grade Off Coord
Asst Coach 9th Grade Def Coord
Asst Coach 9th Grade Off. Coord

We are a 3A school in Minnesota and have been very competive and conf champs 3 out of the last 4 years. Enrollment is around 470 in the top 3 grades.

The only thing I can think of is to have someone call the schools around there and see how many they have to compare. I can send you our personnel groups, but I don't know if they want to hear how Texas does it. If it is less, then maybe not use those numbers.

Also, how do you run practice? Are the freshmen coaches down there with the freshmen by themselves? If so, and you only have 2 coaches with say 40 or 50 kids, then it could be seen as a liability issue. And it is just plain not fair to the kids to not have enough coaches to run things. The future success of your school in football and athletics in general will be impacted greatly. Are they happy with how you guys have won? Just tell them it needs to stay this way, or grow even if they want to continue to have the same success.

Assuming that all of the coaches on staff there are teachers there as well, losing that one coaching stipend won't save the district any real money anyway. Get that woman off the school board.

Just an update on our situation with the female school board member and trying to cut a coach. She lost the battle! Our entire staff went and presented to the school board and we each talked about our responsibilities during the week, the lower level responsibilities, film, editing, scouting, travel, fund raising, along with teaching each position the necessary skills to be safe and successful in football. With in 30 sec. after our presentation the chair of the school board says, "We have heard more than enough information why we will not be cutting a football coach end of discussion."

Tog,

To make a long story short on the AD situation, I withdrew because I could not get the job. In our contract it says that any teacher who is rift (cut) and there is a non-licsened position open the rift teachers have firsts right of refusal on the position before they can interview other candidates. We have 2 high school teaching positions being cut this year and one of them applied for the position so he will get the position by default.
