Three Questions for Head Varsity High School Coaches

1) I teach 2 classes and serve as an "administrative assistant" which is more or less a dean of students in our district. My classes are all in the AM so I have all afternoon free. There will be some restructuring next year but I will still have 7th hour free.

2) We have a 7 period day and full-time teachers teach 6 periods.

3) Last period off.

1 athletics
1 conference (which I go to freshman athletics for)
1 lunch
5 classes

This is in Texas. But, I am the ol. The ad/hc has no classes. But he also has no secretary and works his butt off trying to get things done right and deal with all the parents and bureaucrats.

former school:
a/b block schedule
* 1st / 5th period = varsity & jv athletics
*2nd / 6th period = class
* 3rd / 7th period = class [lunch built into this period]
* 4th / 8th = conference

"new" school:
7 period day
1st = class
2nd = class
3rd = class
4th = varsity/jv athletics
5th = planning period (department)
6th = conference
7th = freshmen athletics

these are as an assistant. former school i was not involved in freshmen athletics. new school will have me working with them since coordinators are in both periods.

Coach:
I am the Head Football Coach, and the only coach who teaches in my building. We have 2900+ students and last year I had 180 kids in our program. I teach 5 classes (2 Senior Advanced Math, 2 Geometry, and 1 Accelerated Physical Science). I have had a "new" class on my schedule each of the last five years. I do, however, have my planning period at the end of the school day.

Coach Cella:
I coach at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

I am the HC. I teach 5 physical science classes on with one duty and a lunch in a 7 period day. I have 7th period off. I would love to have my kids in a conditioning but being certified in Science I will never be able to get out. Next year they are adding a chemistry class.

#1 I taught 2 classes (other than my FOOTBALL WEIGHT TRAINING CLASS - which I, of course, voluntarily taught). My two top assistants were assigned to the weight class with me, & we had about 80 players lifting (FIRST period always, so there was suffiucient recovery time before practice in-season).

#2 Non-Coaches taught 5 classes (Department Heads had 4)

#3 Last two periods off!

Of course, I had a GREAT athletic-minded Principal who "WANTED TO WIN"! Nat Hardee of Deep Creek HS (Chesapeake, Va) - the BEST friend a coach could have!

I'm the head Frosh-Soph coach, but my schedule would be the same if I was the head varsity coach.

1st Period: 7th Grade US History
2nd Period: 7th Grade US History
3rd Period: 8th Grade US History
4th Period: 8th Grade US History
5th Period: 8th Grade US History
6th Period: Lunch Supervision
7th Period: Prep
8th Period: 7th Grade US History
9th Period: Prep
3:15PM - 5:00PM: Weightroom

We have a really good contract. There are not many schools in our area where teachers get two prep periods a day. Also, I get paid $10/hour to supervise the weightroom and $15/day for cafeteria duty/lunch supervision. Our administration and school board has been pretty supportive of coaches and extracurriculars in the past.

Wow, that's a big schedule brmurf. I guess it's too much for them to make you a full-time AD. We have the same issues in Pennsylvania.

We are on block scheduling and I teach 3 of 4 each day. This year my planning block is the first block each day. Next year I will be the AD as well, so I will teach the two morning blocks and have the afternoon for my AD duties.

what is FRESHMAN ATHLETICS?

our teachers teach 6 out of 7 bells.

i am lucky to have a great teaching situation.

ALternative Education Program - kids come in from 8-noon and then leave. i help/supervise with their needs.

hour lunch and then i have 2 periods called "credit retrieval". Kids come in and make up a class they have failed in the past.
