As a Head Footall Coach, how do you broach the subject of handling officials with your staff and players? My personal method is to prohibit ANYONE EXCEPT MYSELF TO CONVERSATE WITH ANY OFFICIAL IN ANY MANNER. I learned a long time ago that you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar and it takes a long time to develope this attribute if you are a young and very competitive assistant. One of the best "handler of officials" that I learned my philosophy from was Hank Stram. He was a master at working the officials on game day! He was quick to congratulate them on a good call, slow to chastise them on a bad one. It was all part of the game to him and having watched him work the sidelines on any number of occasions, he simply was the best. I ABSOLUTELY ALLOW NO TALKING WITH ANY OFFICIAL FROM ANY OF MY PLAYERS, PERIOD!!! IF MY STAFF HAVE CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS, FINE. IF NOT, THEN THEY TOO ARE UNDER THE NO TALKING ALLOWED RULE. Over the years I have come to know that the zebras are human beings too (although some of them sure don't act very intelligent upon occasion) and should a close call arise you stand a much better chance of having it go your way if you have been positive with them all night and not constantly on their case. Think about it, put yourself in their shoes and picture a snap call having to be made that could go either way, see my point? At any rate, was wondering what rules you have in place in your program governing this facet of the game?
