Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
How do you guys play trips-wide sets? I am really interested in how you cover out of blitzes. I am looking for rules on this. Any help you can give is appreciated.
Roll tide, Have played 4-2-5 for 15 years plus now. We are a bump and run (not turn and run now) defense that play man 95% of the time. WE ROLL UP HARD WITH INSIDE LEVERAGE WITH THE CB'S ON #1, TWIN MONSTERS ON #2, AND OLB'S ON #3 AND FORCE EVERYTHING TO THE SIDELINE. WE DO NOT BELIEVE IN GIVING UP ANY KIND OF INSIDE SLANT, EVER! Make them throw the fade or any other high percentage route than a simple quick slant which will break your back if you let it. lot of coaches are going to do anything but walk an OLB out to #3. My philosophy on this point has always been to have OLB's who can go out there and man handle a receiver type before he can beat you with his quickness in getting off a jam. WE JAM EVERYBODY THAT IS A RECEIVER, INCLUDING TE'S. ( THE TIME YOU LET THE te HAVE FREE ACCESS INTO THE PATTERN IS THE TIME HE WILL BEAT YOUR BUTT!!!) Just my way and my thoughts as usual.

Thanks coach, but we can't make it in that kind of coverage every down. I am trying to stay away from man as much as possible because the people we play can run circles around our kids. I am only going to play man when we blitz.
How would you suggest covering a double twins formation when blitzing both OLBs? How would you cover a trips when blitzing both OLBs?
I blitz very little, opting to contain instead and play area responsibility. But, if I did I would never blitz in either of those scenarios you question, if you blitz your OLB who is left to cover the slot but the safeties? If you do that, and your kids can't play man, your outside guys are going to have to sit way off in coverage ans the QB will just short route you to death, see my point?

if they show it pre snap we call strength AWAY from the numbers and put our "weak side" personnel on the number side, and bump our WILB out (as the lead run game threat is no longer there). We will look for our WOLB ($) to re route #2. ---F-------------------------------- -----------------------------------C- ----------W-------------$--------- --------E--------------------------- -C-G-T-----------------------------X ------------------H--------Z------- We check to Cover 3 against any trips set.
If we have strength called TO the numbers (especially a team that likes the bubble screen or runs tosses out of this), we would check to a "wide" front - with the RUSH jamming #3 on his way to the QB. ----------------F----------------------------- --------W-----------S------------D-------C- -----E------T---N--------R----------------- -------T--G--C--G--T---------------------X ----------------------------H--------Z------
Have you thought of playing a 3-3?Move to a 50 front with DE,DT and other DT.Take DE and either walk him out or leave him stacked behind DT.On snap he either rushes or drops. We do this a lot.Our DE had 3 int's last year and 6 sacks.Needless to say,he was our most athletic linemen. We also get in a 3-3 and drop our most athletic LB to Safety at the snap or right before the snap.and play a 4-1 or 3-2-6.Out of these formations we still rush anywhere from 3- 6 people.
Roll Tide, It sounds as if we are in similar situations. We can't play man every down either (we hardly ever play it) b/c our athletes are not better than our opponents athletes. We switched to the 4-2-5 last year with a base robber coverage and it worked out great for us with a lot of really young kids playing varsity. I also struggled with blitzing and trips as you mentioned and really reworked these things this off-season. In passing situations we zone blitz and in running situations we man blitz. We also bump our ILB to trips and knock the DE down to B-gap but do things a little differently in the secondary then previously mentioned.
