Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
In a B-Squad game which we were losing by 20 with under a minute left on our own 10 we decided to take a knee and just run out the clock. Our own official hurries to start the play clock with 26 seconds left on the game clock. Our OC didn't not call in to take a knee again, and both teams started to take helmets off and shake hands. The ref throws the flag with 1 second left on the clock and marches off 5 yards for delay we all have to put our helmets back on and run one more play, which of course we just took a knee again.
Very inconsequential, but certainly made me question the judgement of this particular official.
First let me say that we have a hard time getting officials nowadays because they are treated so poorly. I've yet to meet any person who wants to do the wrong thing. We need to appreciate that they are willing to give their time for very little money and take more abuse than they should. Do talk trash about the Refs to your players- what are you teaching them when you do that?!
BUT there are times when you just can't believe where their minds are at. Great players/ teams/ coaches don't let it phase them.
The weirdest thing I ever saw was in a game last year when an official gave our head coach a unsportsmanlike penalty because someone IN THE STANDS yelled "hey Ref, YOU SUCK!". The ref walked over to the stands kicked the person out, but proceeded to penalize our team. Now, he was an older brother of one of our players, but how does the ref know that, and what makes him think that penalizing the team is the right thing to do. I felt like having my wife go over to the other stands and yell "hey Ref, @!$#^^%&*%$##%%# you, you #@%!@^&**ING JERK!" !#$#@%^^&*&^^^& your momma, and @%%##^ your zebra friends!" So that the ref would give us our 15 yards back :-) We were so far ahead in the game all we could do was laugh, but Illinois rule is that if a coach gets kicked out of a game he can't coach the next week either, and that was our 1st playoff game.
One thing I learned last year from our leagues head official is that an official cannot actually eject a coach. He can only continue to flag his team for unsportsmanlike conduct. After a certain number of flags of course, that coach is reported to the UIL, the state's governing sports body for possible disciplinary action.
The strangest call I think I've ever witnessed was one that it took about 10 minutes of consultation to finally get correct. A one point safety that was awarded during last years A&M vs. Texas game in Austin. I had no idea there was such a thing and apparently neither did some of the officials on the field or in the box!

..
One time, while watching our Freshmen play....near the end of the game there were multiple fouls on our Frosh. squad to be accrued on the subsequent kickoff (their team just scored). They added 30 yards to the kickoff location, so the other team was kicking off from OUR 30 yard line! See the field position, they rightly opted to squib it to pin our guys deep. Well the ball ended up out of bounds, and the refs spotted it at the 35 yard line!
needless to say, though...it was too late and too far gone in the game to make a difference.
I think the refs made the correct call. WHERE YOU KICK OFF FROM from should not alter the spot at which the ball is respotted by rule if it goes out of bounds on the kickoff. UNLESS THE HS RULE IS DIFFERENT IN THIS RESPECT. If the respot is on the 35 in HS ball, I think they did it just right.

A few years ago, we ran a play in which the slot receiver ran a chair route (up-out-up). After running the "out" part of the route, the DB held the receiver as the reciever made his cut to run the last "up" part of the route.
The hold was as clear as day. The official didn't throw a flag, though. When our HC argued the call, the official claimed that "there was no holding because the receiver made a double move", whatever the heck that means. We were dumbfounded! Alot of officials don't like working our games because they know that they will be running their butts off.
In my neck of the woods, there are a lot of coaches who would like to see the forward pass outlawed and the only allowable plays would be runs between the tackles!
not that it mattered, but while running our belly series (wing t) our fake to the fullback was "so good" that their monstrous DT completely burried our FB 2 yards in the backfield, while the pitch was given to the wingback. Our speedy wingback broke for a good 20 yards - but it was called back for "holding" (by our fullback)....
"CLIPPING ON THE BALL CARRIER" - as the defender spun out oif a block - our ball carrier ran up his back going into the end zone. They ACTUALLY called "clipping on the ball-carrier"!!!
How in the world so you clip as a ballcarrier? Reminds me of that Motel 6 commercial with the thick glassed refe talking about seeing everything as he pours the sugar on the floor missing his cup.

The guy who is responsible for assigning officials in Northwestern Illinois is a spitting image of that guy.
1. We had a sniffer back who lines up about 1 foot behind the butt of the offensive tackle called for lining up offsides. NOT a false start, but lining up offsides. The official said that he needs to be at least one yard behind the QB's feet. This is a formation that we've been running for over a decade. Never called on it before, and never again.
2. The opponent's kick return specialist caught the ball on the 3 yard line, began to run laterally, then realized that we were going to hem him in. He retreated into the endzone and kneeled on the ball. The official called it a touchback and gave the ball to our opponent on the 20.
3. On fourth down 7 at our 11 with less than a minute remaining and us up by 3, our opponent's QB sprinted out and threw a pass out of bounds into the end zone. Our DB covering a receiver about 10 yards away from the ball collided into each other out of bounds as they were both trying to stop after the play was over. The ref threw the flag and called pass interfearance on our DB. First and goal, they scored and won the game.
Official lines up on the 5 yd line (i assume it should be the Goal-Line) so that he can call touch back or not. anyway, we kick to the 5 and the official calls it dead as we are covering. He thought he was on the goalline and was taking the ball to the 20. the other officials chimed in and they decided that there would be a "do-over". I am not an expert, but i think if the guy made a bad call, they should have stuck with it and gave the opponent the ball on the 5. i have also never seen a 'do-oer' before. as it worked out, we re-kicked and the guy returned it to the 50. So then we had a 45 yard swing in field position.
We kicked a field goal from the 40 yard line (did not expect it to go in, but it was going to be better than a punt), the ball crossed the goal line but was short of the goal post. One official is waving for a touchback and the white hat overrules him and spots the ball at the 47 where we had kicked it from. I called time out and explained that the ball should be on the 20 and that he was using the NFL rule. He did not buy it and it cost me a timeout.
Another time, we were running the ball and my TB fumbled the ball and the other team recovered it. The officials brought out the sticks to measure for the first. I asked the line judge what they were doing and he said they were seeing if we had a first down beacuse if we did, it would still be our ball! After the white hat signaled that it was first down the other way, I called time out and asked him why they measured and he said it was a lack of communication. He could not explain to me why his line judge told me it could be my ball if we had the first.
UNBELEIVABLE, HOW SOME OF THESE GUYS LACK IN TRAINING. SOME ARE REALLY GOOD, BUT SOME ARE JUST FLAT A JOKE!!! YOU BUST YOUR BUTT ALL WEEK LONG, ONLY TO HAVE SOME CREW LIKE THESE GUYS BLOW THE GAME FOR YOU. TRUE, THEY HAVE A TOUGH JOB, BUT SO DO WE! I KNOW MY JOB AND HAVE ALWAYS FELT LIKE THEY SHOULD KNOW THEIRS. I HAVE NEVER BELIEVED THAT ANYONE REALLY STARTS OUT THE GAME WANTING TO BE A BAD OFFICIAL, THEY SIMPLY LACK THE TRAINING AND COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF THE RULES, WHICH IS A PRIME REQUISITE TO ME AS THAT IS THEIR REASON FOR BEING ON THE FIELD TO BEGIN WITH!

Durring one of our games, a ref tossed a flag he said we had too many players on the field, rather than letting me count the players he removed one of my players (a free safety) and re-started the down! I was pissed becuase now I was covering without a safety (cover3 cloud) We now had 10 players on the field we got burned over the middle and I stood next to the side judge and said "Jesus christ!" and he threw a flag for unsportsman like conduct, and told me never to use the lords name in vain again! "I SWEAR TO GOD THIS IS A TRUE STORY!"
The ref that tossed the flag was totally wrong in his actions. However, I congratulate the side judge as what you said IS VERY MUCH UNSPORTSMAN LIKE CONDUCT and certainly not setting anything but the poorest example for your players. Just my opinion as always. Nothing personal meant by it, coach.

The story in the bible tells us that when the crowd wanted to stone mary magdaline (I hope I spelled it right) Jesus said "he who is without sin, let him cast the first stone". No offense taken coach, but if saying "jesus christ" is the worst thing I've done, then I have a great track record! I'm certain most coaches at any given point durring a game have spoken alot worse! Reflect on some of your own game actions, you might surprise your self! To add to the story, I said this near him ,as he and I were next to each other.
I should have never voiced my opinion. Please accept my apology as this is not the place. In relation to my coaching for the past 40 years, I have been an ordained minister for 30 years and the taking of the Lord's name in vain is a very serious matter to me. Please just forgive me if you will.

Coach : Please dont miss understand what I am saying in the post. This man too was a religious man and allowed his emotions to get to him, I ment no disrespect, to him or to anyone! I enjoy reading your post's sorry for the misunderstanding.
We were on defense and the other team was moving the ball on us. It was third and medium and they broke about a fifteen yarder after I believed we had them stopped for a very short gain. Then I saw a flag and thought "great, a hold or block in the back on them will negate their gain. Then the official signalled the call was against us for "block in the back." Needless to say I wanted an explanation so I called a TO. I asked the official how a defender can block in the back, especially when the call is right where the ball carrier sprung free? He told me that defensive players certainly can block in the back at anytime. I then told him I was going to have my ball carriers run backwards, so if they were tackled from behind, they could tack on ten more for 'blocking in the back." He was not amused. I then asked for the official who made the actual call to come over. He explained that "your #5 hit your#34 in the back as 34 was about to make the tackle, thus the block in the back." I realized at this point it was a lost cause and walked back to my bench.
I coach both a High School Varsity team and in the spring I also coach a youth team (10 year olds). I got 1 really crazy calls from both of these.
High School team - Our SAM linebacker made a great hit on a reciever that just cought a pass accross the middle. I mean it was a big hit. Perfect in every way. Ref throws a flag for personal foul agianst our LB. Our head coach called the ref over and asked for an explanation and the ref said that the hit was just too hard. He said we needed to tell our players that this was not the NFL and they did not need to hit that hard. He wanted us to tell our players to "go in a little softer" (that is an exact quote)
Youth team - We are on defense and make a stop and the ref call for a measurement. Sticks come out and the ball is obviously short. Ref calls a first down. Now this happened right on our sideline and I say to him...look the ball is short. He says to me the tip of the ball is all that has to cross the Stick; so I look down and I say thats fine...but the tip of the ball is not crossing the stick. He looks down again, bends over, picks up the ball, and moves the tip past the stick and says to me very matter of factly...Yes it is
