anybody have a good set of cover 2 rules and keys? i am talking more along the lines of route reading, but want to keep it as simple as possible for our kids. thanks.
I learned that corners read #1 to #2. They collision #1 and force inside, then sink with #1 to 12 yds if he goes vertical and get your eyes on #2. If #1 run inside, yell "IN, IN, IN" and look for #2 running the out. If they flood the zone (EX: curl / flat) split the difference but be sure to take away the curl up to 15 yards up. You can always come up and make the play. I tell my guys, when in doubt, be able to make a play on the widest and deepest guy in the flat. The curl player collisions #2 and reads #2 to #1. If #2 runs an out, yell "OUT, OUT, OUT" and look to collision #1 running inside. Safeties (deep half) must be deep enough and wide enough to keep everything in front of them and make all plays down hill.
As a general rule in any zone, it's a good idea to get depth. If you're an under coverage player and there is nobody in your zone, drop to 12 so you can see them coming in and collision. As a deep half player, you must keep every one in front. Not sure if that's what you were looking for.
Corners and safeties read #2 receiver. If #2 goes vertical, corner plays #1 man and safety plays #2 man.
If #2 goes to flat, corner will drop, comes up to #2 as QB turns to throw to flat. If #2 does a wheel, corner must take it. Safety will get inside and over top of #1.
If #2 goes inside, corner stays on top of #1 while looking for someone coming back out. Corner can not let an inside receiver cross his face. Safety will look for crosser if #2 is a shallow crosser; if not, safety will stay over top.
OLB is curl player; he can not let #3 cross his face. He will jump #3 as QB turns to throw.
Corners align 7yds deep opn outside foot of WR; safeties are 10-12 about 4yds outside the OT/TE (depending on formation and field position).
We like playing this far better than traditional cover 2. We don't have to spend all that time on funnel technique, and we don't have to worry about 4 verticals.
