In another thread, there was a brief discussion about a tighter landmark for the diveback on inside veer. (I beleive it was referring to Navy.) I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on the benefits or drawbacks to having a tighter landmark. Currently, we have our FB aim for the outside leg of the guard. Thanks for any input.

Do you think your aiming point offers something different or better than the way we do it? We aren't having trouble neccessarily, and maybe if it isn't broke, I shouldn't try to fix it. But, I also think that if there are benefits that a tighter landmark offers, I might have a reason to change. For example, maybe a tight landmark forces the dive key to make a more pronouced decision, i.e. an easier read for my QB. On the other hand, maybe the difference is so slight that a change is not worth it.

My MAIN reason for doing it is simply the fact that a tighter path increases the distance for a 4-5 tech to try and pinch the B gap. If you have a FB that hits the hole with explosion this can often times mean the difference between getting through the hole, or getting stuffed. That is my reason for always having done it this way. Shoot, if your not having a problem, don't listen to me, go with what you know coach.

I like the idea of the BROWN SPOT aiming point. after the first step, (if the FB is aiming at the spot), he will actually be at the outside hip of the G when carrying the FB. If you are aiming at the outside hip of the G from the first step, then the DE or read man definitely is at an advantage when squeezing. that one short step away gives the FB or offense the advantage. IF the QB does give, the difference between that one step is an 'arm' tackle compared to a 'stuff'. The arm tackle turns into a 3-4 yd gain and i will take it. I think this makes perfect sense!
Been there, did that. That is where I got my point method instead of ride and decide. But, that is all I took with me. That was pushing 20 years ago now, and I still feel the same way about big splits. Don't let it affect you though, you go with what you know.
