How many of you use varations of the inside zone as another play completely or as an adjustment versus a defense that would be tough to run the pure inside zone (fullback blocks bsde, the linemen work in combos, and the running back's aiming point is the outside leg of the playside guard)?

I know that Oneback has talked about "taging" the inside zone against a three technique by having the ps tackle block down on the three and the ps guard wraps up through.

I am particurlay (sp) interested in hearing if anyone has incorporating the fullback leading through (similar to an iso) but keeping the zone principles of the play.

When using the vertical push up to the bslb zone we use, we have assigned the fb to the wslb when we run against a 4-3 and wanted to run weak against it. The mike and sam would be taken care of us rotating up to the bslb.

We also on occasion tweaked the rules for our psot and TE to rotate "out" as it were to the 8 and have the fb lead on the linbacker they would normally rotate up to.

Basically it is just a way to run iso with zone principles up front for the ol to use.

In one of his tapes (i think it's his wide zone tape), alex gibbs talks about and has cutups of zone "force", where the fullback motions strong, makes the same read as the TB and leads the play. Not sure they do it with inside zone as much as outside zone (gibbs states emphatically that denver's FB's NEVER go into the A gap because they are trying to stretch the defense as much as possible).

When he talks about it, he makes the point that if the FB is aligned weak in the backfield, most weak zone running plays are by necessity "force" plays because the FB is responsible for Will LB, though they do tag the weak zone with a "force" call if the weak safety is walked down into the box and Will is shifted inside into the A gap.

The Tennesse Titans used the fold block in the inside zone game only when called. I know Oneback has talked about this as well. If they had a 3 tech. that they wanted to play games with they would make a fold call and pin the 3 tech, and pull the guard up to the Lber. 3 techs can be tough to block in the inside zone play, so having an alternative gameplan to deal with them is good.

There are MANY variations to the PURE Inside Zone ITSELF (not counting the reverse off it, play action, etc.):

1. "Fold" block (TAG, etc.) at P.O.A.
2. Lead an offset "H" thru the hole (either WITH pure zone blocking or ISO at P.O.A.)
3. Trapping man on center or first man on LOS opposite the P.O.A. with the "H", with pure zone blocking on frontside - to PART the defense (what SOME refer to as "WHAM"). BIG play for Redskins in 80's, & Panthers 2 years ago in Super Bowl season.
4. PRE-DETERMINED CUTBACK play - RB pre-determines a full cut, with "H" coming all the way across & kicking out EMLOS backside (without motion). Skins ran it in 80's & early 90's. COLTS did a GOOD job on it THIS past year with E. James running.

PS: YOU MUST LEARN TO WALK BEFORE YOU CAN LEARN TO RUN - DO NOT FOOL WITH ANY OF THIS STUFF TILL YOU HAVE "MASTERED" THE IZ ITSELF!!!!!!!!!!

How did you get this info about the Titans? watching their games? clinic?

Did you notice they would fold block frontside or backside??

I saw them fold block backside a couple of times during the season in the games I saw.

Do you know in what exact siuations they would fold block?/

ALWAYS BE LEARY OF A TEAM THAT "NEVER" DOES SOMETHING (IN THIS CASE FB NEVER IN A GAP) BECAUSE AS SOON AS THEY HAVE EVERYONE BELIEVING THAT BALONEY AND A BIG GAME IS ON THE LINE, THAT IS THE VERY THING THEY "WILL" DO!!! Just my experience perhaps, but have seen teams do this all the time on the college level for a lot of years. Similar in thought process to running 30 dive option all night and always giving it to the FB in the B gap and then when on the goal line with game on the line they run the Belly and fake the FB in the B gap and give it to the RB one hole over!!! Works like a charm, give it a try some night!

I do run an ISO with zone blocking. Not sure if anyone else out there does this...but, Let's say we have a pro set and on the strong side they have a 2,5,9 with the LB stacked behind the 2. In zone rules, the Guard and the Center would combo the 2 to the LB. What I do for my ISO is everything stays the same, but the player (C or G) that comes off for the PSLB actually looks backside and helps a backside lineman (usually on BSLB)... thus freeing up the PSLB for the FB. Your ISO is still there with a cutback possibility.

Just what I do.

We did something similar the last two years, except we switched our center and fullback from you you did. This way we used our normal zone rules with the C stepping playside and Ace comboing with the PSG on the 2 tech to the stacked backer. Often we'd set our FB to the playside and have him work back against the grain through the Center's area to seal off the BS stacked LB. This gave our TB an almost designed cutback lane right through the center area, although he read the front side like normal inside zone. Oh yes, in this case (backside 2 tech), we'd also have the BSG widen his split because he wouldn't be zoning with the Center, so he could open up the Center area for the cutback.

If we got a 1 or 2i on the backside with a 3 on the playside, we'd switch the C and FB and block it exactly as you described. Although, especially against a 1 tech we liked the QB to change the playside, so we could Iso the LB in the open B-gap (we used regular zone rules against head-up DL but used something similar to Coach Campbell's "part the sea" tech if we got shades).
