Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
In individual time, do you spend time working on drills or teaching x's and o's or both? How many drills do you use in a practice and what are some examples? Ex. D-Line What are some must's? How many different drills do you use or do you use the same ones over and over? Trying to get some practice ideas and plans together for spring practice.
D LINE MUSTS = drills that incorporate the five basic techniques employed by any d linemen, namely 1. BULL RUSH 2. SWIM 3. RIP. 4. CLUB 5. SPIN and should be practiced every day, imo.
IN ADDITION= SHED DRILLS, HANDLING ANGLED TRAP BLOCKS, KICKOUTS, ETC. IS A MUST, IMO. X and O's are taught in the class room sessions, practice time is for perfecting technique and implementing game plans.

we platoon, so I don't know how this will translate for you but EVERDAY....
we spend 10 - 15 minutes on position specific drills in a period we call "Winning Edge"
then we break up into Individual - LOT of drill work...pretty much breaking down what we WILL be working on in Group time / Team time. ( ie. if we're defending Iso / Power....we'll spend that first 5-10 minutes of Indy time working on the first 1-2 steps of defending the REACTION and progress from there) we eventually work up to speed in formation recognition and keys..
Group time is the defense working together in what will be preparing for in TEAM time (off vs def). After every walk thru / play we coach 'em up.
Team time is when we try to make them go all-out as much as possible, make all your mistakes here so you won't make them in the game.
I look at practice much like a musician (my background) loks at performance....build through scales (drilling perfection, do it right!), practice with the rhythm, encorporate the melody, REP IT TO DEATH.....so when you perform it will be a Crisp Reaction....not sloppy hodge-podge slapped together.
I'll give you a very brief explanation of some things I do in practice. In no specific order. just some things i do EVERYDAY.
A. 10-12 minute Agility Session
1. 3-4 minutes doing bags (step overs / lateral run / in & out / hop / and 1 more too difficult to describe here). 2. 3-4 minutes on a wave drill: on all fours, chopping feet, watching the ball, dropping/rolling back chopping again and when i raise ball, they get up, yell ball and sprint 5 yds past me and get ready to do it again. 3. 3-4 minutes of something I call a "figure 8" where I just have 2 circles and two guys in a down position chase each other around the circles. Kind of hard to explain here on the board!
**This is a very intense session.
B. 10 minutes Session
1. Form Tackling: Straight on / anlge 2. Live tackling: usually with a big pad so they dont bang up their elbows and knees. Makes the kids hit harder with the bag as a cushino.
C. Football Specific
1. Read Drill 2. Shed the blocker **You can incorporate a tackling drill with this!! 3. Pass Rush: Rip, Bull, Swim, Bull Rush, Cleub **I do fundamental technique stuff like ripping and swimming my big pop-up dummies. **This can lead into a very competitive OL vs. DL drill.
D. LB's will come down and do an INSIDE DRILL
1. With coach on the sled, DL and LB core will align to strength (I'll have a TE on side of the sled or the other giving strength). ON the "set go", defensive front and LB's will take 2 perfect steps to their gap responsibility as I represent the flow of the play. We will do this until it is PERFECT. 5-10 minutes everyday. (You can practice all stunts/blitzes/stunts with this drill). 2. From then we do an INSIDE DRILL vs. a scout team Offense.
E. Team D
F. Team Pursuit
Finally, as stated by Tiger above..... practice these things EVERYDAY.
My guys are moving at all times during the 2 hr practice. As far as teaching x's and o's on the field.... i think these things should be taught before practice in the locker-room or in some type of PRE-PRACTICE.
I think every assistant coach should have his guys together EVERYDAY in some type of meeting or PRE_PRACTICE so that time is NOT wasted on the field. Just my opinion.
