What is the QB's READ IN THE GUN OPTION

We are planning to teach the QB to read the C gap on the zone read. The five technique end may stunt to B gap and we don't want the QB confused with the read. Don't know if it will work, since this will the first year we have run it.

From what I have seen on clinic tapes that is how Utah ran it; for those exact reasons - I've heard a few DC's talk abouit playing games with the DE's to screw with the QB's read. I think reading the C-gap defender is the way to go - that way he's reading an 'area' as opposed to a specific defender.

Someone will be assigned the C-Gap contain responsibility if that DE is playing games.

It is more than feasible to run a true triple option from the gun four-wide set (It's really just a variation of the wishbone). It seems that most of the posts in response to the original question focus on running the zone read, but running the triple is an option to explore.

I recently attended a clinic and listened to Bob O'Mera, head coach at Arizona Western College. He has been running the triple option since the late 60s, and he too is beginning to tinker with running the triple out of the gun. In many ways it makes the QB's reads a bit "cleaner."

The QB's read is not horribly complex. He reads the first defender on the line of scrimmage that is outside the fullback's path. If that defender goes flat, pull the ball and proceed to the second and third option. If the DL does not turn his outside shoulder toward the QB, the ball is given to the FB.

It is also, out of this set, possible to run midline option and speed option. It's a beautiful thing.

Hawaii, before June Jones and Fred VonAppen, in the late '80s, used to run the triple option out of the double slot-T formation (ace set, 4-wide, one back, whatever you want to call it), and it was fun to watch.
It looked like you'd be facing a run-n-shoot team, and then the slot receiver would go into motion, and you'd have the fullback faking the dive to the middle, and the QB hitting the edge with the slot receiver now the pitch man. It was a thing of beauty.
