Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have always been a little leary of the 4-4 b/c of the huge hole it leaves off-tackle. Obviously I know people run this defense and have great success with it. What drills and keys do you teach the DEs in regards to closing down the C gap. I think this is a great D for us b/c we only have 3 coaches and schemes like the 30 stack and 5-2 often require those "hybrid" players like the OLB/DE or spurs/SS. Looking for some drills and general input.

Coach, I would love to help. What particular off tackle plays are you referring to? It can be power, counter, zone, G scheme, outside veer, etc... Each play has its own set of rules to go by. To be honest it depends greatly on what your 7 tech reads or does he.
Actually we see all of those except the zone and G scheme. Outside veer we just have make a train wreck with the FB keeping his outside arm free. Looking for any advice you have to offer. Thanks.

There are some schemes where the 7 tech. simply attacks the v of the neck of the TE. We do not do that. We a a visual key--which is the OT and a pressure key--which is the TE. We step and feel for the TE and see the OT. We take a 6 inch step to the TE with our outside foot and feel for him with our outside hand. Our eyes are always on our visual key for at least 1 to 2 steps, from that point on several things can happen. If we feel hard pressure from the TE we will fight him and get our eyes to the backfield fast. If we do not feel the TE we react to our OT reads. We would squeeze C gap and look for 1st level to 2nd level trappers. This seems like a lot but our kids are pretty fast at it. It must be repped everday. If we do not have a TE we are in a 5 tech.
I could go into more detail but I think you get the picture.
Is this true regardless of if the DE is a 9tch or a 7tech? Or for that matter an openside DE? I know the openside would not usually have TE to key but for depth purposes is there carry over?

We do not play a 9 tech. DE, but we do walk up an OLB to play a 9 tech. We play all outside shades such as 3, 5, 9, the same. To open end he would be a 5 tech. We attack the first step of the read and squeeze.
If we are playing a 7 tech we want the ballside hand down. Other than that I really do not care on the rest of the D-Line. I know people will probably blast me for that but we stress a stance that puts the kids in a position to react and attack the reads the quickest. I have heard many coaches that talk about which hand to put down and such, and I do know that most of them are better coaches than me, but we have not gotten to that point yet. Maybe we will someday. Hope that answers the question.
I have not seen anyone mention any kind of stunt to help support off-tackle. How about sending the OLB thru the hip of the TE while the DE pinches thru the hip of the OT. This will force the ball to to the sideline outside where the LB can run it down? How about slanting to the TE and running th TE-side OLB on a stunt (thru hip of TE or deep for contain)? You could also slant to the TE and send the LB thru c-gap.
When you get the end and OLB on an inside pinch your alley player will be the free safety when the ball bounces. When playing multiple 8 man fronts the free safety should be your best player. Coach CAmpbell
TOTAL AGREEMENT WITH THAT POST, COACH. I'M JUST ABOUT OF THE MINDSET THAT SAYS HE SHOULD BE THE BEST PLAYER IN WHATEVER SCHEME YOUR RUNNING. DIV 1-A AND NFL PEOPLE ARE REALLY INTO FORGETTING ABOUT THE CORNERS AND REALLY CONCENTRATING ON THE SAFTIES THESE DAYS.

I would have to agree also with that statement. Our best years on Defense was when we had our best player at Free Safety. This year looks to hold that possibility!
