What do you do when the basketball and baseball coaches are frowning on our athletes getting stronger in the weight-room? I share many athletes with the baseball and basketball program, and I have never seen these coaches step foot in the weight-room. I have a good idea that they are pressuring them to stay away from the weights. I have talked to these guys and I know they are telling me what I want to hear - but the reality is that they feel like the kids will not be able to throw a ball or shoot a basket if they lift. I am knowledgeable in my sport about what lifting can do for an athlete, but what information can I do get these coaches to realize that the weight-room will enhance their performance - regardless of the sport?
This has been an on going controversey for many a year. The round ballers as I call them are as equally dedicated to their sport as we are to ours. The only way to not get in a big heated controversey is to just let them go with what they know and hope that they might become cognizant of the truth and the reality of just how much can really be gained by added strength gained in weight training. If you think you have it bad now, you ought to have been around 20 years ago. At least in todays world, there are lots of young guys who really understand and do their best to get their older counterparts to see the light. I can remember when it was DAILY go 'round!

That is a tough one. At least your coaches are willing to share players. Just watch and NBA or MLB game with these guys, and show them the bodies of guys like Ben Wallace, Alonzo Mourning, Roger Clemens, Albert Pujols, and the like. The guys are weight lifters, and they are very successful. Heck, show the basketball coach highlights of the kids at Duke. You can also have them talk to the local college coaches of their sport. I don't know what else you can really do otherwise.
